Starting to clean up the old ride. After seeing all the surprises some of the guys have run into when they start removing the old paint I was expecting the worse. I saw some really clean cars at the start turn into nightmares when the old paint came off.
My car had terrible paint. It was a 100 ft car.
My son started to remove the trim and parts. The removal of the paint has turned into an unexpected surprise. So far we have found only 3 spots where any filler has been used in its 23 years. Two spots in the drivers door and 1 behind the passenger's door. No rust at all yet?
I an taking all the smaller parts and trunk lid to be media blasted. I feel safer taking off the paint on the fiberglass parts by blasting.\
Here are some pics of the progress. I am also having some of the aluminum parts polished up.
The fiberglass hood looks like a lake on a windy day. That will take some work.

Tear down

The parts come off. We were amazed how easy these cars are to take apart

More sanding

Reading about the different ways to remove paint in this section convinced me to sand the old paint off. It has turned out to be easier then I expected. So far.

More of the drivers side.

The chip guard on the bottom of the car is pretty tough to get off. It will be the last to sand. If anyone sees something I should be concerned about please speak up. This is all new to us. I will have a painter do the primer and painting. He is talking single coat with a couple of heavy coats of clear with all the necessary sanding etc. He is using a good PPG paint and the primer I bought was DP90? I got this information off this board so if I am on the wrong track please tell me.
I read up in hear and talk to the guy painting the car like I know what I am talking about? I really don't

What grit sand paper did you use to get the paint off?? It looks pretty aggressive. The only thing I would worry about is the marks front the sander. But when you primer it you can wet sand it in between coats to get it smooth.

I used 80 grit. That's what was recomended. The paint supply store told me to primer with DP90 then use a filler over the primer. Block sand the car then use single stage PPG paint. We will apply 3 or 4 coats of single stage then wet sand and polish.
I am still in shock about not one spot of rust on a 23 year old car. I was expecting the worst. One small ding in the door that had been repaired. This car sat for years in San Diego and I was sure the salt water near by would have did some damage.
I dropped off the rear bumper for powder coating.

The 80 grit is pretty aggressive. Up close its is rough

looks good, are you going to put some 2k primer filler on it then block and reprime it?i would,i did my car about 9years ago and it still looks great.

Finally laid down some single stage. Three heavy coats were appied and a few dirt specs made it onto the paint. They will all come off with the wet sand and buff. A really deep black color.
Painted an extra trunk lid while we were at it. The fiberglass hood has a few lines in it but pretty nice
