Race Gas, alchohol and Propane are allowed and the Exhaust can be modified. Sounds to me like a T/R can run 11's given those rules even with the stock motor and DOT tire requirements.

It doesn't say I can't run my modified stock airbox that's gone 11.53, I've run 11.70's with a 100% stock intercooler (no big neck), My turbo looks 100% stock externally and I'll bet a Dollar I can run a high 11's with a stocker.

Think what you want, but the NHRA allowing ANY car to run quicker than 11.99 without a roll bar is huge.

Be nice to your local track officials as they will the ones to determine if your car meets the new requirements.

Somebody please tell me what "showroom stock" car under $250,000 is capable of running 11.5's?

I think NHRA is trying to encourage a little more action at the tracks instead of inhibiting it

What DON'T you understand about the following:

"Within the framework of the street-legal category, the following technical rules and regulations will apply for PURE STOCK Street Legal vehicles that run 11.50 or slower."

States that the new rules apply to PURE STOCK Street Legal vehicles that run 11.50 or slower. Simple.

"PURE STOCK Street Legal rules are specifically intended for street-legal vehicles that are PRODUCTION STOCK, AS MANUFACTURED AND SOLD BY THE ORIGINAL AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURER."

Defines PURE STOCK, if you not sure what PURE STOCK means, or are in denial. Simple.

"For street-legal cars other than PURE STOCK, tech rules and regulations are the same as those in the NHRA Summit Racing Series E.T. vehicle section of the NHRA Rulebook."

If you ain't PURE STOCK, nothing changes. Simple.

"Once any power adders or performance hardware are added to a PURE STOCK Street Legal vehicle, it is then also classified as an E.T. vehicle "

Further defines PURE STOCK, for those who are extraordinarily stupid or not paying attention or continue to be in denial. Simple.

I never said a PURE STOCK Cobra or any PURE STOCK car for that matter can run 11.50, but I wouldn't get my hopes up that that number represents some sort of cutoff point for modified vehicles. NOT!

This rule, for example, allows the guy with the Viper or whatever PURE STOCK convertible to run without a rollbar, should he choose to do so (so long as his toupe is securely fastened).

Yes, the NHRA and their member tracks know where their bread is buttered, but if you think the NHRA is going to stand behind a bunch of modded late models running 11.50's without the usual safety equipment, you're in denial.

After reading the rules several times, it appears your tires have to be radials. Also, I think this will have a great benifit for convertable Cobras, Vipers and LS1s since they no longer need a bar at 13.99 but little benifit for most. I for one don't expect to all of a sudden see a hundred 11.51 second street cars at the track since most run 14 - 15 up here. (Of course since I just had a bar installed I could be in denial )

I disagree that the NHRA is wanting vehicles to be 100% stock with absolutely no mods. Heck, even on their website in the link above its says aftermarket exhaust can be used. Now that wouldn't be PURE STOCk, would it?

Main points in the article are that stock drivetrain and suspension must be used. Rigid suspensions and lightening prohibited. Drag radials and race gas can be used. So I guess they would know that you can't be running a cat with racegas so I think they forsee some light mods that can be done. As long as stock computer used, its ok. I think that leaves room for chip mods, as that is not referred too. Also not mentioned are things like cold air intakes etc.

To me it looks live they are definitely leaving room for typical mods most new car owners do. I think by explicitly saying you can have aftermarket exhaust the absolutely 100% PURE STOCK argument is thrown out the window.

While not intended for these cars, it looks like TR's, supras, and other turbo'd and supercharged cars from the 80's/90's will also benefit from this rule. Now most of these cars don't go high 11's without drivetrain and suspension mods, but it can be done. Since its only 0.5 sec reduction, most gains will come from convertibles/roadsters previously limited to 13.99. I wonder about the old musclecar convertibles though, such as a big block chevelle convertible or similar that could run 13's on drag radials, since this rule wasn't meant for them, I assume.

Yeah, our cars came from the factory with racegas and drag radials and aftermarket exhaust!! Oh wait, how can it be pure stock with aftermarket exhaust. This is not a PURE "FACTORY BUILT" STOCK CLASS. It allows for some modification.

I'd like to hear it from a NHRA official's mouth or even see the rule in it's entirety before deciding what is and is not allowed in that class. There are sections in that article that would lead me to believe that a TR with some bolt-ons and DR's should pass tech in that class, but then it's really all up to the tech inspectors and how they interpret the rules. If they allow race fuel, I'd expect they would allow the mods necessary to support it. They are allowing aftermarket exhausts so I'm sure a K&N, chip, etc would not be an issue.

It will be interesting to hear some results after some of us try to pass tech in the street class. If it doesn't effect us at least it's a great day for those with convertible LS1's and Cobras.

The whole purpose of this class is to get kids off the street and on the track. So, if you don't let kids race in this class because they have a k&n filter, cold air induction and a wing on the back (see ricer) then its defeated the purpose!

Interesting post! Just my opinion.... when you get in the mid 11' or over 120 MPH it is time for a bar or equipment needed. When I got past mid 11's I knew it was time. I have a funny sense about knowing when something can hurt or kill me If you are going that fast you need to make your own set of rules including this stuff if you can't follow what is already there. We only live once!

no kidding, if/when I get my project going good, even if it's it breeches the mid 12s I'm gonna put in a roll bar. Life's not about things going perfect, err "stuff" happens. The rules are in place for a reason, I think there was a post in the drag section about being courteous to the safety inspector, in the end they're not only looking out for their liability concerns, they're looking out for YOU. Safety regulations are there for a reason, a person doesn't tend to admit it but we're fragile. We bleed, we die and if someone wants to advise me how not to become a piece of hamburger on the highway more power to them. Far as it goes, I imagine these rules will vary a LOT from track to track, it seems like they leave a lot of room in the way they're worded, and in what they say and don't say. (eg things like intercoolers on hot airs, propane, alky, porting etc. are allowed)

As an example, under existing Summit E.T. rules, a convertible running 13.99 and quicker must have a driveshaft loop and roll bar. Under the new rules, a pure-stock street-legal car will not require this equipment unless it runs 11.49 or quicker

So, what does this mean for IHRA tracks. Morso, here in Palm Beach Florida, is an IHRA track. Opps... just looked it up, now its NHRA.

Don't think it means diddly squat for IHRA tracks because they already let you run 11.50's without a rollbar.... Bradenton (BMP) is an IHRA track and Moroso as far as I know has always been an NHRA track....

I went to my local track Friday who recently received their NHRA certification back and have been enforcing the rules pretty heavly. Anyhow, first pass off the trailer was a mid 11 which, any other time would have bought me a warning from the tower. This night I knocked off a few more mid 11 second passes (over 11.50 though) then noticed the staging lane dude talking about my car on the headset. I was reading his lips when he told the tower I had MT street ET's on the back....nothing was said the rest of the night. The tower knows my cars VERY well as it has been kicked off a few times since the NHRA reinstated thier certification. They also know (think) that it is 100% stock for the most part, apparently to them it falls in the "pure stock" catagory. I was sweating it that they were going to slow me down for not having a DR on the back, but aparently they felt the Street ET's being DOT approved were ok. This is a gret thing as I was on the fence about a bar for the TTA....not right now anyhow!
