My car all of a sudden will not upshift until you rev it to 4000 + rpm. and back out of the gas.

Tried T.V. adjustment, no luck.

Took the pan off and checked T.V. valve, plunger seems to move in and out good.

Stumped.

Check for a missing gov. spring.

Jim

There was nothing in the pan, where would the spring be if it was missing or would it just be out of position?

This happened after dooing (hehe) a WOT blast. Worked fine all day at the track running low 12's all day and did a blast on the way home and wouldn't upshift after the blast without getting high RPM and letting off the gas to shift. All gears will work but when letting off the gas it will coast with no engine braking in OD. Putting it in manual D and L1 will give engine braking.

Gov. spring!!

Yup, it sounds like the gov. spring. its a known problem for the spring to fly out after a WOT run.
The spring if it wasn't in the pan, could be under the cover for the gov. , the pan has to come off to get to the gov. cover and gov. I think most recomend a set screw to secure it in place.

. had a problem that was the same after a day at the track and a WOT blast . would not upshift out of ANY gear unless the revs were in the 3500-4000 range and I pulled my foot out of it . spring dropped out after I took the gov plate off . rather than a set screw I put a dap of expoxy on each end of the spring let it dry over 24hrs .problem was gone .

Tim, were you able to use the spring again or did it need to be replaced?

No it was a little "stretched" out I got another spring but I do not remember where I got it from . It was from either Transware or PTS . fairly straight forward job , just remember not to over torque the gov plate bolts .and be real carefully pulling it off (plate) there is a gasket . I'm sure Paul P may have one (spring) kicking around .

Got a gov. spring out of an 'HD' 2004r and put it in because our local 'expert' said it would work fine.;)

Now it shifts too soon and soft.

Also put in a B&M shift kit. Works great.

Tryed T.V. cable, no luck.

Does the spring fix apply to all situations? I have to let off the gas to get my car to shift but only when going from drive to O/D. Every other gear is fine.

In my case it did apply to all shifts on a trans that I had before the one I have nowwhen the gov spring popped out. I'm having a simular problem as you on the trans I have now. below is a email I recieved from the fellow who rebuild mine. I made a inquiry about the problem you mention.he is a trans tech for GM Canada in the R&D Lab and builds performance trans in his spare time . I have yet to make the adjustment that we recommends . other than that the trans performs flawless .

"Hi Tim. How are you doing. My 4L60 (700R4) does the same thing. If I am driving down our main street (Tecumseh Road.) say at approx. 60/70 KM in D4 range it will be in third gear , if I let up on the gas a little it will upshift inito fourth gear. Now the reason it was not in fourth gear is because the throttle pressure is higher than the governor pressure at that time. this can be because the cable is slightly out of adjustment or the throttle pressure is boosted , Now both your car as well as mine have a larger than normal (production) (TV) boost valve .SO if you are at all into the throttle than the TV pressure is higher than a normal trans so it will modify the shift point. SO you can try moving the cable toward the thottle body one click to see if it makes it more foregiving for you. By you slightly letting off the gas the governor pressure will now move the shift valve over. Keep in touch. Paul."
