About to finish this motor and got it primed today. I have 62psi on the drill spinning at 600rpm on the engine stand. New gears, standard TA cover. I can hear a tick when doing this though. I set the pump clearences and spun the gears on the work bench and there was no noise. I did not hear the noise before it was actually pumping oil either.

Are these things supposed to make some noise?

The more i think about this, its probably the end of the priming tool making the rattle

I don't think its my tool any more. Does the small relief valve in there ever chatter?

I have never heard one chatter.

Most of the time, new gears have lots of little burrs and sharp edges. Those little burrs grab metal and tend to foul up a nice front cover pocket. I like to glass bead them to de-burr and it is a recommended practice explained in the Buick Motorsports manual.

I would disassemble the pump and inspect. You might consider glass beading the gears. I also lap the ends of the gears on a surface plate (or a piece of glass).
