Hey guys, On my Gn there is oil and trans temp gauges, The oil temp was 210-240 depending on the driving and the trans was 220-250 which I know is way to hot, What should the oil be? The car has a 7 quart pan, a large remote mounted filter and a good size external oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator, the engine runs 170 max, Is it normal for the oil to be that much warmer than the coolant? It also has a large transmission cooler, the only thing I can see with the transmission is the lines are pretty much resting on the header, Is that a possibility for the heat? It shifts good and the fluid looks ok, not burnt or anything!?!? sorry for the long thread, Just trying to address things before they become problems! Thanks, Ryan

My 87 has a tranny temp gauge, and it's a stock setup with no external coolers. It's tranny temp usually hovers around 190, 200 if pushed.

Don't know about the engine oil normal temps.

going from...

memoory, 210* on the oil, was probably normal under hard excelleration. the tranny temp can reach 325*+ under hard excelleration. Last year I accidently swapped the lines on the trans going to the cooler and the trans gage went up to 350* during a tuning run and I thought I lost something, but I had just swapped the lines.:o

Thanks Dave, very helpfull, I also Just orederd That relocation kit from caspers for the fusible links! Thanks for the heads up!

That does sound a bit high. My oil temp is usually right around coolant temp or just above. I think the highest I have seen is about 210. Same for trans temp.

My sender is in the pan. I run no oil cooler. Where is your sender?

The sender is in the pan also, im exploring the possibility that radiant heat from the crossover pipe may be heating the sensor? they are fairly close together?

On my car, I compared guage temp to a Raytek pointed at the pan and they matched very close. You may have a indication problem.

My oil temps. run 180-210 degrees.

75 and up on the highway will push them to 220 sometimes.

In the winter low side of 180 usually.

My buddies '86 and '89 Corvettes ran 210-230 oil temps. with stock thermostats.

i was told the oil temp should run pretty close to the coolant temp +/- 10

My Buick doesn't have engine oil or trans oil temp gauges but my '02 Escalade does and it never sees 200 unless under heavy load like towing the boat, long hill in hot weather, etc. If it hits 200 its only for a brief time before it cools back down to 180-190.
From what I've read on transmissions, temps above 200 start to shorten the life and should be avoided if possible. A racing situation will obviously see way high temps for a short period. Is your coverter a lock up? I would talk with the experts that built your trans and see what their take is.
BTW I run Mobil synthetic ATF in all my vehicles.
