Well all the parts arrived and I will be working on the install over the next few days.....

Nice!...Is that a Moser unit?...and how much $ ? Are you going with a ratio close to the stock 3.42 ?

Claude.

Claude.

The housing is made by a company out of Iowa called Quick Performance. I orderd the unit to be 1" shorter than stock. I have $1265.00 in the housing, axles and brakes.

The third member is TJ's from http://www.ford8and9inchrears.com/ I have $1300.00 in it. TJ came highly recomended from some of my friends at the local track. I saved about 65.00 in shipping the thrid member when he came to Pittsburgh to run the Nitro Jam a couple weeks ago.

I am using 3.45 NASCAR ground gears. Once I get this installed, I have to order the driveshaft from Strange. I hope to have this back on the road the first week of July, but we will see since work always seems to get in the way.

coach is looking for a 8.5 rear in the wanted section if your looking to sell yours

What does the new rear assembly weigh compared to the 8.5? It would be cool info to have.

@Erik--Im not sure if there is a weight savings. I'll weight it before I finish the install.

I started the install tonight, well just the basic mock up. The housing fell right into the control arms and the bolts slide right in. The shock mounts are off and if I try to use them I will likely bind the shocks, (thank Jdpolozin for the heads up.) I haven't decided if I am going to weld in the the bottom of the old housing shock mounts or fab up a washer arrangment.

I got the rear assembled over the last weekend. I had to add some braces for the brake lines and paint it. I have it set in the car but not entirely bolted in. I ordered the shaft from strange and it should be in next week some time.

Ya the mounts are off a bit. If you take a look at the 8.5 you will see how the shock mount hole is angled. When you try to install the shock it really twists the shock mount. I made a 'shim' to correct the angle.

I decided to stay away from the disc brakes. I did a hydroboost conversion awhile back and I have no issues with braking. Also if I do the disc in the rear I want to run the Willwood to match the front.

My measurements are 55 1/4 from trans seal to center of the pinion u-joint with the wheels hanging all the way down.

Looking really good dude!

If anyone needs brakes, I have set of Baer Iron Sports for Big Bearing ends for sale. They are new aside from using them for mock up and painting the calipers Red.

Dave, how did you make your shims?

The driveshaft has arrived! Looks to be a well made part. I will put up some photos in the morning.

@jdpolzin I drilled out the hole on the housing and made an insert that fit loosely. Then I bolted the shock to the insert and tacked the insert to the rear. I'll take a couple photos of how it turned out.

WOW what a big differance the new rear makes. The shifts are firm and hard, the clunk is gone when the gears shift. I only drove it a couple miles but it really ran great. The pick up is a little quicker I didn't think I would feel the .03 differance in the ratio like I do. But hell it could be just in my head. Since I havn't drove the car in a month or so.

I had to resist the urge to beat up on a Viper that was tailing me so I could let the gears go through a heat cycle. I just chuckled to myself thinking, "I will be back. Oh yes I will be back and next time, your preppy ass is mine."

thats good to hear,i went with a rear disk upgrade and a pst driveshaft.we modded the housing so i can change the fluid without taking everything apart, and its painted getting ready to go in,glad its performing like it should.

 looking good, thanks for posting up the process, might help someone else out down the road!!
