Well, I made my point clear, and am sick of getting email notification when there is a reply here. So dont bother posting to me because Im taking the reminder off. Cops can stick it.

Scott:rolleyes:

I do not use the plastic covers but if the Police can hide behind bushes to trap unsuspecting drivers then I do not have a problem with people that do.

In Phoenix most of the people that get ticketed are on the freeways where the covers are useless.

Red light runners should have their permits suspended.

I know they are illegal in Pa., the're not supposed to be passed for state inspection. Most mechs and cops don't bother you though. Because you have a friend in Pennsylvania, man thats cornny.

PRime example,,I was driving home this morning and there is this A$$muncher blowing red lights like crazy,I catch up to him to flip himm off ,long story short,I flipped off one of Chicago's finest as he pulled into Starbucks:eek: in a POS car

How come nobody knows the real reason blue lights and red lights showing front are illegal. It does look bad for officers that don't know why and just issue tickets.

FWIW, In VA any cover of any type over the plate is illegal. Ive seen cars with them in VA but they are clear and clean so they are hard to notice but if they run across a cop that needs to increase revenue or the cop wants an excuse to pull em over they'll get a ticket.

FWIW II in reference to cops. Some are cool. Some got beat up in school and now have the "Im a bad&ss now attitude". They all have a crappy jobs and put up with ppl who are garbage on a regular basis. The ones I have issue with are the ones that wanna lean on my paint while writing me a ticket all the while wearing ~10lbs of keys, cuffs, guns, and other what not that scratchwes the paint. That same cop being a lippy/attitude having/man hating carpet muncher makes it even worse. Freak'n hag...

That brings up a good question..........why are most female cops dikes? I know we are batting 1 for 1 here at work.

Cop or no cop, we are going to have issues if your leaning against one of my cars.

Where can I purchase the clear acrylic (flat) covers to protect the front plate? I'm not looking to fool/jam radar and/or to shield my license plate from visibility but just to keep bugs and debris off the plate. I've looked at AutoZone, Advance, etc and they only carry the bulky plastic ones that I don't care to use. Anyone??

Hey Evans, just make your own.
Buy a piece of 1/16 or 1/8 Lexan(Home Depot), cut-to-fit inside one of those cheap black frames you see at AutoZone, drill holes to match frame bolt holes, stack a few washers between lexan and tag on the bolts to keep Lexan from wearing on your painted numbers or whatever your covering.
Cost was around $10 but you will have enough Lexan to make about 4 covers.

I made 2, just a thought.

Probably not!.

Really the last time I read the motor vehicle book was at 15 when I was trying to pass the drivers test.

How many 30, 40 & 50 year olds are going to sit down & read every rule in the book?

Personally if you are on a crusade to stop these people maybe you should tell your State officals to have the law spread through
newspaper & meadia outlets to make people aware.

Sometimes bringing attention to things like this can backfire making more people question why..

thanks!

James,

Thanks for the tip. I'll check out what Home Depot has and make them as you suggested.

I don't understand this either. So instead of the bugs and debris sticking to the plate it'll just stick to the cover over the plate instead. What's gained? The logic escapes me....

Let's see if this explanation helps you in what I do with the clear license protector...... bugs and debris clean/ wash easier off plastic and/or lexan and protect the painted surface of a custom painted plate which has more worth for replacement than the protector. I just bought a nice mirrored chrome front plate with the "6" emblem in the multi-colored format that I want to mount and have it remain looking good once on the car. That is as to the painted surfaces of the plate. Here in GA, we don't have a front and rear license plate requirement so many use a custom or car-related front plate. We do have some vicious bugs that have high acidity that can wreck havoc on any painted surfaces though! I can only speak for the South as I'm native and have never resided elsewhere. Hope that helps.

A+

Yes, that helps. That's the most thoughtful and logical response I've heard yet.

Thanks!!

Yeah Evans...we got about three more months before those wonderful Love-Bugs hit us. And for the Northeners, I ain't talking about a swarm of VW beetles either. Although, they too leave a nasty little spot on the front of a GN.:D

Dean,

I have a clear cover over my back plate. I drive 10 miles of evil gravel road every weekday and half of that time the road is a muddy mess.

The plastic cover is slimed with mud, as are my brake lights.

I found (actual experience) that without a cover back there my tags come off due to repeated washings -- I love to have a clean car. Also, after about 5 years of high pressure hose attacks, the plate starts to look like crap.

Here is my one and only experience being stopped in that car:

I was on my way to work and my wife and I stopped at the bakery. We both came out wearing leather jackets and got into a red sports car....about the time all good highschoolers should be starting class. She figures that is why he singled us out. Many other people that day had muddy back ends.

We were pulled over about 2 blocks up the road. He came to the window and I gave him my papers. He came back and asked me if I knew having that cover on the back was against the law. I replied "yes". He did not look surprised but asked me why I had it. I told him the whole blasting mud off and ruining the plate and tags.

He told me.... get this..... I can keep the plate cover BUT at the end of the dirt road when I get onto the pavement (50 mph) to stop, get out a rag, and wipe off the cover!!!!

I asked him if I didn't have a cover would I have to do the same thing? He said yes, as he could not see my numbers.

I almost suggested that seeing as I drive by the cop/fire house every day.....I will pull in and they can hit the back of my car with a firehose and we will both be happy.

He didn't give me a warning, just some bad advice. I have had covers on my cars for 20 years and that is the only time I have been stopped for it. He never mentioned the fact that NOBODY could see my brake lights....... which to me is an issue...not a plate cover.

I am pleased that they think there are better places to be than stopping me for a silly cover.

Hey- thanks! Glad I could explain it in words that you could follow. Thanks for saying my rsponse was thoughtful and logical- wish those employees I supervise thought the same way of me!! I have no need to cover my rear plate which is my state license plate. I have a super nice original light blue Georgia tag that I want to cover too to go on the front of my '70 Buick GS455.

I think I know what you were polling on as to the original intent of this thread. People will always try and one up the law enforcement and many are continously looking at any new tips or tricks for a license to speed and not get caught. I actually found some of those plates/ sites that make it difficult for radar to hit when I was searching for a clear front cover for my plate. Personally, I have no need to play that game as I'm a 45 year old law abiding citizen. Well, most of the time anyways! ;)

Mr Ward thanks for taking the time to explain what EVERYONE (non Cop)) was thinking ,,we were just too lazy to explain it as well as you..I am sure I speak for about 90% of the TB community that we use them to PROTECT our plates,,in fact are'nt they called plate protectors,,some just think we are trying to hide something...you also forgot to mention that salt is very bad for the plate(well here in Chicago)

Thanks again..:)
