Please Answer what does drop in mean to you??????

I bought a part from a member here he sold it as a drop in part. cluster for a 84-87 regal, I bought it turns out you need to cut dash and bezel is that drop in to you????

Up for sale is a Dakota Digtal Dash drop in for 86-87 turbo regals. It displays Speed, RPM, Oil press, Water temp, Volts, and Fuel in %, it DOES NOT show BOOST.
It includes:
1: Digital display (w mounting tabs for dash)
2: Computer control box
3: Speedometer sensor for 200R4 tranny
4: Oil pressure sensor
5: Water temp sensor
6: (2) Push button for trip, odo, ect and adjusting
7: All instructions
Works perfectly but it does have a small scuff between the 7 and 8 (in pic, it has to be at the right angle to show up).
$400 Shipped to the lower 48. 3% extra for Pay-pal

I think it should have said requires dash modifications, even if it didnt go into detail on how in depth. A little heads up on fab work is always nice to know.

You should have expected some kind of mods that would needed when you are replacing a dash with an aftermarktet job. It's a given that when you got something that's not nos you should expect some massaging to get it installed. Even nos stuff can still need some help.

I would expect 'drop in' to mean that it meets factory dimensions for a direct fit..or that it will fit directly with no modifictions if it is a different size because maybe the size difference wouldn't matter.

Standing on the edge of a half pipe with your skate board and you [drop in ] .. Thats what it means .. No such thing with parts .. Just like bolt on's ..my grandpa used the term drop in the bucket all the time ..

Just what I was thinking. I don't think I've ever been able to install a bolt on part without first doing one or ten things. I always appreciate the fact that the part is very close to being done. I'm always glad that it takes a doable amount of work to get it done. What's the alternative? A boring dash.

I can see doing some fitment if he stated that . But he stated drop in witch cutting the dash/bezel to make fit is not drop in. just like the drop in fuel pumps those go in with NO problem no cutting of sender ot gas tank to get to fit, this cluster the bezel needs cut to the warning lights to both sides, thats not drop in to me SORRY

when i was new to working on cars "drop in" to me meant that i remove the old part, take the replacement from the box and fasten it in place--------now that i have been doing this for a while it has morphed into: remove old part, cut, drill, weld, saw, hack, kick, bend, hammer, grind, torch, jam, force, twist, modify, rewire, replumb, paint, glue, replace missing parts, try to decipher poor instructions,
and force the new part in place.....................RC

I never had a drop in part on my car. For some reason nothing is ever simple. I would be a little disappointed like you are now. But I wouldn't be suprised when it didn't "drop in". I just know it is never simple.

I tell people all the time, if it was easy everybody would be doing it. I agree with RC, if changing something you better be ready to do work. If it goes easy your lucky.
The last "direct replacement exhaust kit" I bought would not fit til the tailpipes where cut and shortened and one muffler had to be expanded.

I don't think it should be advertised as "drop in" if it is going to be a hassle to install with mods, cutting, etc...A THDP was drop in for me, but others have not been....If you go to the cars for sale section and someone is selling a "turn key" car you expect the car to run and drive as it is suppose to.....

Im with Kip on this one. BTW all dash kits typically install fairly easy but the bezel needs to be cut.

Just do a search for GNX dashes and see what goes into them. Not a drop in.

Well I'd say drop-in is more bolt on than plug and play but either was you got a nice dash at a great price. If you don't want to do the fabbing you shouldn't have any problem selling it and getting your money back. Wish I had the extra $400. I'd take it off your hands.

I almost bought that dash. I did call Dakota digital and asked some questions about the install and the guy on the phone told me the dash had to be modified for fitment. He also said its not plug and play due to the difference between digital and analog dashes. I asked about the new dash coming out and this is what I got from someone else

Our new VHX instrument system runs off of our control box, and includes new sending units for oil pressure and water temp, as well as speed. These senders each have their own harness. The remaining signals, such as turn signals, high beam, tach, boost, etc, can use the wires found in the stock harness of the car.

This system is not a direct plug-in, so whether the car originally had digital or analog gauges shouldn’t matter.
