Hello everybody, new member with a problem. I have been reading all of these posts about oil, and honestly have become more confused the more I read.

I gather from what I have read, that I need to get some zddp additive for my GN, but I have been using Mobil 1 in my GN for 10 years (I drive it about 1500-2000 miles a year, usually once a week), and I thought I was doing well with that choice, but now I have even read that synthetics drain off the internal engine surfaces more than conventional? So, should I really be just using regular? Please somebody reply with a opinion in layman's terms please.

snatched this from another thread! list of good oils for a stock engine!
"Royal Purple. (I gained 2mpg over all other oils I tried)
Redline.
Quaker State "Q" oils.
Rotella.
Valvoline "SYN" oil and they also have a "SYN" treatment which is better than GM EOS.
Basically, stay away from all oils with the starburst symbol on the bottle. Those are the ones with reduced ZDDP."

i personally use Royal Purple 10w40 and i to saw the increase mileage!

I've never liked the idea of synthetic in older engines, for the reasons you state that synthetic "runs down" from surfaces a lot faster.

I just buy cheap-o conventional oil and make sure I change it at proper intervals. Changing oil too SOON can be almost as bad as running it for too long. Recently I have started adding the ZDDPlus product at oil changes.

can you please expand on why changing oil too soon can be bad for our motors?

I to am using Mobil 1 synthetic oil 10w-30, but I just changed the oil yesterday and added the zddp oil additive after reading these previous posts on the newer oil out there, peace of mind again, at least for now I will add it with every oil change for now on.

I'll chalk up that comment I made to stupidity. I swear on my life I was just recently reading an article stating that changing your oil is a bad idea because it doesn't allow the additives to run their course and do their job, you're dumping out the oil before they have a chance to be of any benefit to your engine.

Now that someone asked me to explain the statement I made, I can't find this phantom article, maybe I was dreaming. All the websites I look at now say there is no such thing as changing oil too often and the only harm is that you're spening more money that you need to. Can't find this article that explained why it was a bad idea to dump your oil every 500 miles...

So I can't really back up what I said. I swear I read some really convincing article.... I didn't just pull that idea out of thin air.

Anyways, that link that GNTurbo6 posted has me deeply considering Royal Purple for my next oil change. I've said in multiple oil discussions that I thought synthetic was bad for these cars, but reading through the results of those oil tests and showing the minimal wear on that bearing surface with Royal Purple really has me thinking.

But now it's fall/winter and the car won't be seeing much of the road anyways, so I'll stick to my routine of cheap dino oil and just make sure I change it when needed, plus the ZDDP product.
