You never know how it feels like to be that “little guy” that can never afford a 8-10K car but willing to pay 2-4K and slowly work on it. I was there.

I was/am there too man! I took a gamble when I bought mine. THe only way I could afford to make the loan payment on it was to scrape up the overtime at work to pay for it. A lot has changed in the past 4 yrs since then. Sometimes I wish I would have never bought that car ( If I would have known Jeremy then I would have bought that wrecked car he parted and been way ahead). If I would have waited I could have bought the car I wanted. In a way I did get what I want. IC car and a mostly stripper WE-4. I'll be upside down in this car by the time it is finished but it will be all worth it. I saved one from the circle track. I've had some good talks on the board and have made a few friends because of it too. The GNs for sale in my area are big $$$ when they do show up. It took me 2 years to find an IC car I could afford and I would search every day for one. I almost gave up and went back to an fbody:eek: Then one week later I found it. I remember it like yesterday when it showed up on the trailer...with parts on the trailer...and parts in the back of the truck...and parts in the buckets in the back of the truck:rolleyes:

...AND THAT'S WHY WE SHOULDN'T PART THEM ALL!

Great post Jeremy, now you probably know me better than most people here on the board and I agree with you 100%. I was that “little guy” growing up wanting GN so bad but I couldn’t afford it we were poor. So I bought an 81 Regal that was banged up pretty bad for 500 bucks . I did all the body work bought a hood scoop from JC Whitney, blacked out all the chrome and got some cheap wheels. I actually painted the car in the back yard. We had a crappy one car garage and the back yard was much cleaner than the garage any way. I remembered how hard it was for me to come with the cash to even do that. I think a gallon of lacquer black paint was like $39 or something at that time.

The last 18 years, I may have put back around 30 turbo Buicks back on the road and most of them were hot air cars. I sold 4 hot air cars for every 86/87 I sold. I can honestly say to this day I do run into some of them now and then. Most of them are in way better shape than when I sold them initially. I just wanted to fix enough things so that it’s road worthy. The “little guy” took his time and fixed them back the way it should be, mainly the body and paint. Every time I see one of them it makes me proud of the fact that; I had a hand in keeping that car on the road where I could have just parted it out and made more money.

Jeremy you know I have 20+ Turbo Buicks in my barn, all kinds of shape and years along with God knows how many motors and transmissions and other parts. You will never see me parting any of them out or just selling parts here.

I know why people part them out and they have the right to do so, they own it. In my case it’s all about Passion. I love these cars more than anything else and I will do what ever I can to put these cars back on the road. You never know how it feels like to be that “little guy” that can never afford a 8-10K car but willing to pay 2-4K and slowly work on it. I was there.

I am not rich by any means, I came from nothing. I worked hard to get where I am in life. I am always wheeling and dealing but most of all God is good to me and I owe everything to him.

Well put brother! Problem is most people here on the board have more money than heart and think they "need" more money instead of just selling the car as a whole or letting someone else buy that car that is a "good deal." Instead of being a true car guy, many of them just want to "invest" in them and exploit the hobby for all they can get out of it. Some of us are REAL CAR GUYS!!!!!!

Thanks brother, a perfect example would be Nickie's car. Initially I was going to go buy that car. The owner wanted to part it out. This is a documented 50K mile car that had some what rough body. Well I knew Nickie wanted one so bad but at this stage of his life he wasn't able to afford 10K for a good one. I stepped a side and he bought it. He found his dream car for 3K and in few years, that car will be looking good as the next guy with a 15K car. Now if that car had been parted out, Nickie would never have a 1987 GN at this point of his life.

Very true! I remember when he first got that car, he couldnt stop talking about it! Thats definately something that will make me smile:smile:! He's got something to be proud of now. And he's able to bring his own car to the Midwest Meets!

JD what a great post i for one am not rich by any means and when i found my car for sale here on the board went out looked at it, it didn't start and needs paint but at the time (3 years ago) i could not find a GN for under 6k so i talked to the owner we made the deal got it home got the car running found out that the guy wasn't totall truthful about everything on the car o well should have looked at it better that's my fault but with every thing i have done and the paint and body work it needs i will never part it cause i worked hard to get it, only to have it stolen and recoverd the same day. I am a car guy and i would rather work on it and bring it back one piece at a time or sell it at a loss to some one looking for there first TR than see it go to the bone yard as a shell. I started with a car that didn't run to a car that ran 14.4s and in 2 and a half years later it runs 12.50s at 108 with crappy 60ft and horrible reaction time and i never though i would have one so if they are fixable and not totaled don't part them

I am still waiting a reply from the PARTING GURU's on here to see the price breakdown.

I need a L/F door thanks to my wife let me know LOL

That car definately needs to be saved. Not a bad price either. If I had a job, I'd be all over it!

I agree with you jdpolzin.. but I also see the other side.

If it wasnt for people parting out cars, I wouldn't be able to find certain parts for my car that are no longer made or reproduced.

Also, one less GN in turn makes our GNs more rare, therefore values will go up. Sad but true.

Chalk this car as being SAVED!!!

Cosmetically, this car was SHOT! The drivetrain was in excellent condition though.

Bought for $2500 Dec 2008

I have about 15K in it now including the purchase price. Now before anyone says I spent too much... I could have cut MANY, MANY corners but elected not to do so. I wanted a nice TR and I don't regret spending the money it took to get it looking new again. Is it worth 15K now....maybe not... but it is worth it to me. I haven't added it up yet but I'll bet $2500+ of that money was spent on just on chrome parts like the bumpers, headlight/taillight bezels, window/door moldings, "body by fisher" entry molding..etc. Damn these chrome cars...they are real money pits when it comes to restoring them to new or "like new" condition.

IMO unless there's something I'm not seeing, You stole it for that price.

I thought it was a "fair" price for the condition the car was in. It wasn't in "boxes" and I actually drove it home. It was one of those cars that "baked" in the sun all it's life. This car would have been parted out if some of the people on this site could have got their hands on it. The original owner actually had a guy that wanted to buy the car "just to part it out".

If you want to see the looong list of things I replaced go here... All about my Turbo Regal. There's so many pictures there I'll bet you won't look at them all.:D

I have no problem seeing cars parted out. More parts in circulation, means easier to get if I ever need them.

Another reason I don't mind is that there will be less TR's on the road if that happens. I have no problem with that either (as long as I have mine). One of the reasons I like my GN so much, is there aren't many out there, and I like being different. I never want my car looking like anyone elses. I am truly sick and tired of seeing 1 out of every 10 cars on the road being a mustang.

I'm done venting.

FOR OVER THE LAST 7 YEARS MY MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION HAS BEEN A TURBO REGAL 86-87 RAIN SHINE SNOW OR SLEET! but in order to keep my cars going and keep the others stored inside i have been parting out regals ,t types and gn's. most of the turbo cars that i have parted out are rusty new england cars meaning doors are shot, rockers are shot, floors shot, holes in roofs, holes in wheel wells, rotted trunklids, broken header panels, rotted exhaust systems, rotted tires, on top of wasted steering wheels, ripped seats, broken bumper fillers, cracked dash pads, wasted door panels, lets not forget rotted frames on top of half torn apart engines or wasted trannys.

also once the rot starts in on most of the above the fuel and brake lines are also shot! so once you start to try fix all these problems it is not worth the trouble!!!

most people buy one of these cars hoping for the best not realizing there are more hidden problems that they have not even thought of.

what about the cars where the owner has a salvage title from nearly 20 years ago and fixed and drove it on a dealer plate? i had 1 of those and it is a nightmare these days trying to get it through dmv trying to produce reciepts from a car that was all put back toghther 20 years ago with junkyard parts they want vin#'s around here with reciepts.

i usually buy the junks that nobody wants and those come apart for parts!

anything worth saving goes into my collection!

pics below are some of the ones that were destined for the junkyard that i saved and now other cars are living on thanks to those efforts!
