There is a strong possibility that it is your coil packs. They tend to work fine while not under load, but under load they will break up and causing popping. I would suggest finding someone local to you with a known GOOD coil pack and swap it on to see what happens. Do a search on coil packs...there are ton of discussions on them....

Nate

x2 Very possible the coil pack. As stated find someone local to do a swap.

do you have a enough gas in car....mine did that when I had less than a 1/4 tank......after I made the pass...went back got more gas....made another pass without changing anything and ran fine......

Also not really related but???? Get a modern custom burned chip from Eric at Turbo Tweak. That outdated generic one you have is marginal at best.

I have had pops from being too rich. But it could be a number of things.

I've only had a backfire under boost 2 times. Those 2 times were the sounds of my head gasket blowing out of my block.
As loud as a shot gun. So if your backfiring, keep out of it until you find your culprit!

x3 - most likely the coil pack... been there, done that.... a couple times....

Also check the Y hose under the turbo.
I had one go bad which caused an overboost condition

How old are your plug wires?

+4 on the Coil Pack

going to replace wires, and check gap on plugs, already replaced ic hoses thanks for help. its rained all day so i could get car out and play. has anyone seen new tech ad in gm high tech on 87 gn coolant swap and carbon clean out

I've had the wrong range plugs cause this, and also had the coil pack cause this.
What plugs you running?
Have you run an ohm meter across your coil pack towers?
Bad plug wires could also cause it...ohm those out too.

That is no exaggeration. It is as loud as a shotgun! Don't ask me how I know
