I have an 84 442 olds with a 307. ignition replaced, wires, plugs. Car starts cold just fine, once shut off it will crank over but not start what so ever. I have to wait about 2 hours for it to start again. I am leaning toward it being a carb issue. I don't know much about them. Any ideas?

I have an 87 regal with the same motor- its a gutless POS but good for my sons 1st car- had run issues with the car ( asked for help on v8buick.com ) and narrowed it down to the TPS - throttle position sensor - on the carb. Q-jets are a PITA to rebuild period- the electronic ones are worse- pay someone who does it to do it. Had the TPS replaced and the carb rebuilt- runs like a different car. Hope this helps- good luck.

Welcome Aboard. The Q-jet is very easy to rebuild if you need to do it. You're experiencing what's called "heat soak". This is a common problem for the factory carb and you need to check a few things. How thick is the gasket under the carb for one thing. If someone has replaced it with a thin one get the thicker replacement. Check your fuel filter to make sure it's not full of crap. If you need more help please come to the before black section. That's where you belong. With the rest of us "red headed step children". lol

definately wrong site for these questions, however i've had many a quadrajunks. however they really tend to work really well. when this happens does the engine crank really fast or slow? if so, your timing (if altered before could be off). or the heat soak idea afore mentioned is a good thought as well. also electric choke issues, check to see if your primary choke plate, (the plate on the front 2 barrels) is closed when this happens. if engine is warm this should be wide open. hope one of these ideas help. i have an 84 grand prix with a 305. i cut the computer on that one, and it has a holly 670cfm truck avenger. wont stall out when its hoppin  its a low rider

Just wanted to share my recent experience with the quadjet on my 76 gmc k2500. dont understand carbs much. i had the same problem. the solution ended up being the fuel filter. it was crushed and dirty. bought a new paper filter to install and a glass fuel filter as a second option. well what do you know. tah dah! problem solved. only question that i have is when its time to rebuild the quadjet is it worth it? or do edelbrock? let us know what you find?

careful with the glass see through filter.... the grand prix i mentioned.... tried that one, as i only drive it about 2k-5k miles a year, it sat over winter (inside of garage) and LEAKED that spring, replaced thinking it was a fluke, and it did it again!!!!! lol just fyi, cause i already had to watch that movie

When hot (warmed up), is the choke plate wide open? If not, choke thermostat is adjusted incorrectly . Loosen 3 screws on choke thermostat retaining ring to adjust by twisting thermostat.
It's funny, when Fuel Injection came out, a lot of mechanics where scared of it cause they didn't know how it worked.

The Q-jets had a problem with the mainwells leaking fuel down after shut down and was hard to start when warm. When cold, it would be added fuel like the choke set and will start easier. Like Charlie said, make sure the gasket is the 1/4" thick one and not the .030" thick one. Make sure the pcv hose on the passenger front side of the base plate is not cracked wide open or breaking off. Been thru all this on my wife's 86 442 years ago when she bought it and I made sure all this was good. Been a VERY reliable car for the last 16 years. If you kit the carb, cover the main well plugs and other little plugs with JB Weld and let cure before assembly. The kit comes with a little sponge to soak up the gas. Never works.

So far nothing

I replaced, plugs, wires cap and rotor and the fuel filter. Still have the same issue. Car starts cold fine after about 5 minutes of warm up if I tap the gas it coughs and dies. I can hold the gas at 1200 rpm and it sounds like it is running great but let off the gas and it coughs and dies, I can start it again if its hot I have to stay on the gas let off and it coughs and dies.. Maybe it has H1N1

I bought a rebuilt quadrajet from Johnson's Speed Shop in Lansing Michigan for my '72 GS a few years ago. They have many carbs listed on their e-bay store. I paid $165.00 and have never looked back. Great to deal with and quality.

The primary choke pull-off is bad. It is not opening the choke after warm-up. There is a number stamped vertically on the carb. The parts people will need this. There is an adjustment for it though.

LOL Sounds like the the mixture is not set right as well as the idle setting to me. It's running lean for sure. When you try to start the car are you hearing the click click of the mixture solinoid? If it's stuck or the mixture screws are clogged it will do the exact same thing.
