One of the companies I interviewed with is in the high desert, I don't know how that's going to pan out but I'd like to at least get a feel for the area if it does seem like it's going to work out.

What are the laws in that area involving smog/safety inspections?

My GN hasn't had a cat on it since '98, the EGR is blocked off, it has alcohol, and the host of usual bolt on mods.

Is there a legal way around it?

Is there a county in that area that doesn't have those laws?

Should I live in the high desert or commute? Cost of living?

Which areas are best for schools?

My dad lives in pomton lol Palmdale there is no way around the ca smog laws unless u know someone. I don't like it up there personally . I live about 30mins south of there in Santa clarita .

CA makes WAY too much money punishing you for violations, however, it's about air quality, not revenue......... cough, cough...ahem!

Turbolou (Lou Czarnota, Lake Forest, Orange County,CA) has been successful at bringing many of these beloved little cars into line with CA standards.

He took the car I bought and made it CA compliant, but since I'm from AZ and much to his shagrin, when I bought it, I said yank all that stuff off and make this thing go fast!

In AZ, collector car insurance (and the limited miles it provides for) gets you out of emmisions testing.

Who knows, maybe he has some of the stuff off my car around and can help you..... he sure as hell knows what he is doing.

Contact him, he's a vendor here on TBC.

I know Lou...rather, Lou knows my car. While I was overseas I had it stored in SoCal and the crankshaft sensor went bad. My dad took it to Lou for him to replace. I still have all the parts...minus a cat. Right now my work around for two years would be that I could still register it in MT.

Well, if you know Lou, you know he won't steer you wrong.

Thanks, for the longest time I have been able to get away with making decent power while still passing smog. The problem now & keeps getting worst is the smog gestapos keep tightening the standards. A stock vehicle now will barely squeak through. Also low restriction cats are no longer allowed. The visual part is also stricter. Alky kits are even forbidden. Maintaining a smog license is also difficult & can be pulled & the station shut down if caught cheating. Plus stiff fines & jail time. If you like cars & thinking of relocating consider Texas Or Arizona if I was young & just starting out that's what I would do. Ca. is washed up & over run with liberals.

lol...yeah, I hear you. Unfortunately, I have to go where the money is for me.

Got a bit of a surprise today, they called early this morning and asked me to fly out for a face to face interview.

Are any of these counties near Palmdale?

Alpine
Amador
Calaveras
Del Norte
Humboldt
Imperial
Inyo
Lake
Lassen
Mariposa
Mendocino
Modoc
Mono
Plumas
Sierra
Siskiyou
Trinity
Tuolumne

Apparently, those counties don't require smog testing.

Ditto. I had planned on retiring here in San Diego County, but now it's looking like I'll bail. I just don't see this state turning around, and in fact it would have to go down a lot farther before the electorate wakes up. If ever.

Probably wind up in AZ. (But NOT Pima County.)

Since you're from AL. I have a better idea. Keep the car registered in that state & also maintain you're AL. drivers license, insurance & voter registration. That way you can still claim out of state residence. You are allowed dual state residency but only one drivers license & have you're mail forwarded here.Technically in order to keep the plates on the car you must claim that it is garaged 51 % of the time in that state & you're work takes you all over the country, You must have a relative or friend that will allow you to use their address in AL. It's a no brainer !

Dual state citizenship? How would that work for tax purposes? I'm retiring from the military, here in AL they won't tax my retirement pay.

Those counties are where all the...medicinal (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)...marajuana is being grown, so they are too happy to worry about bogus smog testing.

Use some imagination, Since your retired all the better since you have a vacation home in Al. where you spend most of your time. Plus if you check the tax rates in Al are way lower than here. Again there is no law against having two address's.

Alright...another question.

Hypothetically, if I bring a vehicle into CA and want to register it in CA what is the process? I've heard that the vehicle needs to be physically brought somewhere for the DMV to conduct a visual inspection before I can request a smog certificate.

Kalifornia S U C K S for car enthusiasts. smog and the BAR kills us. thank god Global Warming has been proven a sham.. now if we can get our state to work with us a bit..

anyway. smog shops are heavily regulated. you have to pass the visual and sniffer. no way around it. your car can burn clean but if it's missing a hose or something isn't OEM or CARB exempt, no pass.

you will need to take the car to DMV. they will do a visual inspection to verify nothing is stolen, basically. it's a VIN check. it will also verify the car exists and is functional. you will need to have it smogged as well. once all that is done, it's good to go. you MAY pay an environmental impact fee (or something like that). i'm not sure if they still do that or not.

they will give you a temporary operating permit to operate the vehicle while you do all of this. it's a bit of a pain.. but not too bad, actually. i just went through it all, minus the smog portion. it's my last step to getting the car transferred over.. sadly i have to sell it, so no point.

Geez...no wonder the CA economy is in shambles, everyone is too busy running around trying to get their cars to pass smog they don't have time to be at work :)

It's mostly a massive scam to get fee's out of the citizens so idiots like Jerry Brown can continue to buy off the Unions at our expense. That's why they tighten the limits on 23 year old cars...it's not like the car will actually learn to burn cleaner on 23 year old technology....they just tighten the limits to squeeze the owner for more fee's since fee's don't require a vote like new taxes do.

actually

its a way to generate revenue so the state can give more benefits to illegals!
they just passed legislature to allow ILLEGALS to receive school assistance, NOT CITIZENS, BUT ILLEGALS!!!!!!

this state never stops screwing the taxpayers, and giving to ILLEGALS.
