Just read the PPG info sheet that seems to indicate that most of their surfacing primers need to be sealed before topcoating with black DBU. It says this only for BLACK. Anyone else have to do this? I've done my surfacing primer, but used an Omni 2K. I guess I have to use a sealer for this also? The sealer shouldn't be sanded right? Therefore I'll have to shoot it within hours before color coating.

I had planned on shooting the color coat right over the 2K, but I guess not.

I've done it this way..........after blocking the 2K primer, when I'm ready to paint the car, paint PPG epoxy primer (black) for the seal coat, wait 15 minutes and start shooting your color coats. You'll only need a couple medium to wet color coats over the black sealer, enough for full coverage. Clear is where you put on at least 3 or 4 coats waiting 15-20 minutes between coats.

Is sealer easier to apply than surfacing primer? I'm concerned that I'll go to seal the car and it'll end up rough.

The last couple of times I sprayed the 2K, I was real happy with the first couple of coats (went on nice and wet - only a run or two). By the end, several coats later, it ends up coming out a little rough. It was a bit warm when I sprayed, maybe that caused it.

Well, if you use the black PPG epoxy primer, you add a little extra reducer to it for a "seal coat". It sprays very nicely. You only have to put on one coat as long as one coat covers. Then you roll right into your color. Actually, painting black, black covers very well.

Now if, for example, you were painting some metallic color, the seal coat would be mainly to make the car all one color, so that the more transparent metallic color coat, would cover evenly. If you didn't seal it for the metallic paint, and you left primer spots, here and there, there's a great possibility, three coats wouldn't hide them. Understand?
