I am looking to buy a radar detector for my Father-in-law for Christmas. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.:)

For what it's worth...

Don, you need to check out the link posted by mgmshar. Rocky Mountain Radar products were tested and found to be basically worthless junk.

I have a Bel 940 and it works well, it has saved my butt many times.

I got it brand new still wrapped in plastic on eBay for $100.

well i will say one thing...i currently have two radar detectors...1 for the buick and one for my truck...in the buick i use an older whistler model 1650 series and in the truck i use a cobra (cheap model, was $50) and i've been pulled over 2 times while using the cobra because it gave me the warning WAY too late...i wasn't getting a KA signal until i actually saw the cop pass by me on the other side of the highway...then it was too late...

the whistler gives me PLENTY of warning before i see the cop...i think this model was $100 brand new back in 2000 or something...anyways my point is yes there is definitely a difference in quality and accuracy when it comes to choosing the right detector...i am about ready to throw the cobra in the garbage:mad:

Well, after getting two tickets last year, I bought a higher-end Bel (I think it's a Bel Vector 965) per the advice of radartest.com. I love it. It will usually start going off miles in advance, has a lot less false alarms than those cheaper detectors (yes, I mean Cobra and Whistler), and has more features. I don't drive on the interstate without it. Saved my butt many times in the last year. I drive about 25,000 miles per year for work, so a good radar detector is essential.

Good Luck,

Without a doubt fellas

Spend the money ,,, 399.99 plus shipping and buy a VALENTINE 1.

I drive many miles a year and have tried numerous models. This has worked the very best for me.

When you get your first ticket from a laser gun, which is what they use now, you'll know you wasted your money. ;)

We dont have laser guns

out here in the "sticks" haha. They still clock how fast we are going between telephone poles in terms of seconds and equate that to MPH for an "average" speed:D

HMMM...

Any Lazar gun detectors ???? I know that is (lazers) what most FHP's are using these days.

ABSOLUTELY!! Have had ALOT of various brands in the many yrs of being on the road.. Never has the Valentine 1 let me down.. Gets laser very well too!

Not cheap, but the cheapos are like russian roulette...

Any legitimate test always has the Valentine way out front. That guy that does the radar site works for Escort as an consultant and also at fimes for others, but, not Valentine.

Laser is hard for anything to detect altho I have picked it up a couple of times. I have owned several brands over the years and I now own three Valentines...doesn't take many tickets and insurance hikes to pay for one.

Still, laser or instant on can get you if you are the only car within a couple of miles and they step out and nail you.

I agree with the others....The Valentine 1 is top in it's class, tops period. It detects all, inclusing laser, and I've always known what was going on around me way before anyone else. It's quite humorous to have slowed a bit and watch somebody else breeze past to then do the nosedive trying to slow down at the last moment. Oooooo, lookie at the pretty red tailights on that car! :D

Believe me........spend all you want but it's over for radar detectors. :( You can be in a pack of cars and if they aim at you, and your over..........it's over!

oh how i know this! i was in ohio on my way to dropping off my tranny to janis trans in akron while on interstate 80 in my TRUCK...a friggin old ford going 72 mph in a 65 passing a semi and there were cars in front of me and behind me...well lone behold i see a state trooper sitting behind a median wall and lasers me at the last second (radar detector going off like crazy)...

the next thing i know i see the cop throw on his lights...i didn't believe he was going to get me because everyone else was going faster or same speed as i...he speeds up and gets RIGHT on my butt...i was like WTF:mad:

i pulled over and he also sees i am not wearing a seat belt...DOUBLE WHAMMY! i was like "officer, everyone else was going the same speed or faster and i was just trying to pass a semi" he was like "i don't care...you are out of state and guys like you always seem to fly on these roads"

!!!

in indiana if you are in a truck you are not required to have a seat belt on...that's why i didn't have my belt on...oh well had to pay $175 total for the whole incident!

If you like him, get him a Valentine1.

If you don't like him, get him a $49 radar detector from WalMart and watch the false sense of security cost him speeding tickets!:D

Another vote for the Valentine 1. Being a professional speeder:D I have yet to be stopped using my V1. Saved my butt many times.
