I'm about ready to re-insert a Walbro 340 into my fuel tank. Without too much thinking about it, I took off the exterior rubber sleeve from the old pump and reinstalled the sleeve onto the new new pump.

Now I'm thinking, "why?"

Removing the sleeve should help the pump stay cooler by the immersion inside the gas, and lower heat has always got to be better for longevity & reliability.

Is the main purpose of the rubber sleeve as sound insulation?

And if I remove the sleeve, will it make any noticeable difference in fuel pump whine or noise? (if anyone's tried it).

I should also mention, that my tank does NOT have the big sound deading plate glued to its underside.

I just replaced my stock fuel pump last week with the 340 and left the rubber sleeve off. I have no increase in pump noise over the stocker , its actually quieter in my case.

tom h, I don't think that it makes any difference if you leave it on or off...These pump are not known to overheat, so leaving it there can't really hurt, but that is only my opinion!...Besides, lots of regular Regals, have well over 100,000 mlies with the rubber sleeve on, so this leads me to think that it doesn't really matter...
If you left it there, don't bother removing the tank again, just to take it off...
'Bye, Claude. : )

Hehe...I was thinking the same thing when I installed my 340 and hotwire kit last weekend.
I just used a pair of scissors to shorten it and reinstalled the foam sleeve.
IMO, it shouldn't affect the operation of the pump. The pump is cooled by fuel flowing through it, as well as around if it is indeed submersed in gasoline. In the event that it is immersed, the foam is going to also be immersed and I doubt it will retain heat in the pump body because it will be at the same temp as the gas.
It was strange though...I never saw one of those sleeves on a Mustang pump.
