Should I spring the 450 dollars for a master rebuild kit and try to rebuild the tranny myself or get the other tranny out of the 85 monte for 75 bucks and swap all the GN specific stuff over? I've done searches on DIY rebuilds and they all say its not bad as long as you get the CK manual, which I plan on doing. My car is all pretty much stock but I will upgrade as money permits. Is this kit overkill? I plan on running the stock converter. Basically just wondering what would be the best route for a guy with little money? If a DIY rebuild is feasible in the garage by someone that's somewhat mechanically inclined then that's the way I'll go. Just don't wanna spend all that money for a rebuild kit, tear all apart and figure out I'm over my head, then end up paying someone more money to put it together. Not scared to do it, just don't know what special tools are needed nor the expense of them. Input from pro to DIY would be great:biggrin:

if you have basic mechanical knowledge you can do it.get the master overhaul, recaliobration kit and manual and get to work.

..And the low reverse piston/center support removal/install tool.

Check out that low/reverse tool at automotivetools.com. I tried to copy
and paste the page, but it didn't work like it used to. Look for a 1059B
in the GM pullers/installers after clicking on HAND TOOLS on the opening
page. BTW, some tools like that expensive band clearance tool are not
needed. Don't hesitate to ask more questions. We're here to help:smile:

Dammit! Found out yesterday I'm laid off as of Monday:mad: Yeah I think I'm definitely gonna rebuild mine myself. Pretty sure it just needs clutches but why stop there?;) Oh well, guess I'll have plenty of time to pull it:rolleyes: I guess I'll drop the insurance on it now till I get everything squared away, first tranny, then the pesky idle. How long does it take to go through the tranny with the 450 dollar kit? I'm not talking someone that knows what there doing, I'm talking about me, LOL!

 Join the crowd Jesse! I have been off work for a month now! Finally going back to work today! I was on my way this morning to be at work at 7 and the boss just called me to tell me they didnt need me till 9 so I just go back home! Good luck with the rebuild! -------Jeremy

YUP, already gettin cabin fever

Yeah I was hoping to sneak by with only missing a couple days, SOB:mad:
Oh well, make for a nice vacation:biggrin: Wife's still working so hopefully I don't miss a house payment! Give me time to deal with the issues on the BUICK if all this damn snow melts. Might even pull that tranny if I can get the garage picked up. At least THIS tranny will be clean:rolleyes:

Like I said before

I have a bad tendency of overlooking the obvious:redface: . TV cable was way out of adjustment. TIghtened it up now it wants to break your neck on easy shifts, although it is a little too tight. Doesn't wanna shift into second till about 18, 3rd about 35, 4th about 50-ouch! SO I'm gonna loosen it a few teeth and see where I stand. THE STREETS ARE DRYING UP:biggrin: What should I normally be shifting at? Hey Jeremy, looks like I'll have a nice vacation-probably won't be getting back to work till the end of the month. Give me good time to go through and fix crap on this sled, maybe I will make it out sometime this summer, if the air works-J/K!
