Scam waiting to happen or what, how should i handle this if he does call me back....I have no problem travling in the ty there etc,but cashier check scares me...

If you are the guy intreasted in my ty please don't feel offened by this post ,just with the ecomomy and the way scams are being pulled.I don't want to be on this list...

If you do meet him at Indy and you do sell him your ty, I would tell him you will overnite title after funds clear your bank. You do know that cashiers checks can be stopped for payment and if he does that you are a screwed pooch and may never get your vehicle back! I have sold cars etc over the web and got burned the first time and lost 13k! The only way I sell now is to have a bank wire transfer and when funds hit my bank I give the title to the buyer then, takes about 30 minutes and everyone is happy! Just be very careful and try to stay a step ahead. Good Luck!

Pick him up at a time you can still make it to the Bank with him, cash the check and let him take the car home

careful

Just because the bank cashes the check does not mean anything!!!!! It must be COLLECTED. Meaning it has come out of his account and been deposited in your account. Then and only then is it a SURE thing. This usually takes 2-3 days.

Posted this on the other forum...if he can do a CC he do can cash. All the recent scams have been around CC's and Money Orders. I wouldn't do it.

If doing a cash transaction, I would have him meet me in the police parking lot. We had a guy locally that answered Craig's List ads and robbed the people out of their goods, cash and one guy thought he was smart and carried his Glock, well they took that too.

Cashier's checks should be ok IF it is taken to a branch of the bank from which it is drawn. If in doubt, don't make the deal.

If he can get a cashiers check, he can get cash. Demand a cash only deal. And go to your bank and ask for one of those conterfiet identity pens, they'll gladly give you one to take with you.
If you have to drive that far to deliver it, take no chances.

NO WAY, NO HOW do you meet him someplace hours from home & get a cashiers check, give hime the title & keys and part ways. Like others have posted, cashiers checks can have a stop payment made on them.

Not saying he will, but the very millisecond you get in your other vehicle to go home he calls the bank/credit union & stops payment. Now you're fukced!!

If he wants the truck that bad he will come to you, or arrange other means.

I just sold my Cutlass to a guy 800 miles away (I'm in WI, he's in TN) Anyhow, he sent me a cashiers check, I took it to my bank they called his credit union and verified the check, then it was cashed into my account. I then certified mailed him the title & spare keys. Three days later the motor carrier he hired picked the car and hauled it to him.

I was a little nervous about the whole deal, but it turned out fine. If this guy wants your truck I'd suggest doing what I did or he comes to you with a cashiers check and you both take a ride to your bank/credit union and verify the check. If he won't agree to your terms, he's a scammer.

REMEMBER...... the ball is in your court. You have what he wants, you call the shots.

5 Hour drive to sell your car?

I'd either tell him to drive or fly all the way to you to make the deal, cash or bank wire transfer.
Tell him if he isnt satisfied with the vehicle once he arrives, you will refund the money.

If he walks, sell it to the next guy who will go all the distance to make the transaction complete.

That is the bank that issued the checks problem, if you have the cash what are they going to do call you up and say bring it back? He is only 5 hours away then his bank will have a location in your area. It's safe or they wont give you the money.
I didn't say deposit it in your account, get cash.

A Cashiers check still need to clear. Out of state checks will take a couple days. DO NOT release anything until that check clears. There are plenty of cashier/money order scams going around and have for many years.

kirban 2 cents worth

I got some experience in this area.....having sold many of them.....

Above advice is all good....I am 99% certain their are 3 ways you can stop payment on a cashiers check or bank check or certified check.. Plus the possiblity exists it may be a forgery....in which case you would not know as I have had it happen where it got passed by my bank but when it went to the issuing bank it was determined to be a fraudulant transaction menaing the home bank did not honor it....bad new is several days transpires while you do not know this.

Not sure why he can;t fly into your area....

Assuming you have no way of doing a background with this buyer my advice would be to pass....

Some of the best sales pitches....can sound very convincing.....that guy Madoff is positive proof of that! Whether its 30 billion or 65 billion....point is he was good at what he did...

Like I said earlier, make sure the cashier check is drawn on a bank you can both go too when he arrives at the airport. Cash the check, give him the car, their is no way the issuing bank can comeback to you, if their own check is fraudulent. I would also make sure the bank you cash the check at is not the bank you have deposits.
Locate a bank near the airport, instruct him to have the check drawn on that bank and good to go.

If he can't do that then nix the deal. I can understand him not wanting to carry that much cash.

If I were in your shoes I would tell him it's "cash only, we meet at the bank to do the transaction, I'll hand you the title as soon as the money is found to not be fake and it's transferred to my account, and no I'm not driving to pick you up."

If he's not willing to work with you, then it's a no deal situation.

FWIW the above is how I bought my car...I met the guy at his bank in Raleigh, we did the whole transaction before the bank teller...who made sure my cash was real and then they even notarized the title.

Wire transfer is definately the safest way. Out of state transfers take a day or two.

Have sold several over the years, MONEY FIRST period, no if ands or butts. If he wants it tell him to send payment and as soon as it CLEARS then you will be glad to meet him with is new ride or he can pick it up. Otherwise he can come to you with cash period. Someone that is really serious has no problem bringing money with them or going to the bank with you to seal the deal. Have the money in your account period before you give him the title !

Great and timely thread guys as I have a car that may sell soon. Advice taken here. It has been about 10 yrs since I last sold a collector car and I forgot about what a hassle it can be with all that is attached!
