I did a pretest today and passed on the emmisions portion. But they're being gay about my valve cover breathers? They said I have to route a hose to the intake to burn the fumes? Anybody had a problem with this? I also failed the fuel pressuization part. Thats weird cause the car holds fuel pressure for about an hour. But they're gizmo says otherwise.

Oh, I used a TT emissions chip with fuel pressure at 40 psi.

You just need to find a guy that does not know what the hell he is looking at. The place I went to strapped my car on the dyno backwards, and then proceeded to dyno the car (front wheels on the rollers). I had to tell the guy the car was rear wheel drive, he of course told me that he has done smog tests for years and knew what he was doing..... He eventually figured it out due to the fact I would not move out of his shop till he turned the car around. Needless to say, my car passed the smog test. Oh and the visual portion, I have a larger turbo, custom intake, alky, FMIC, DP, After market exhaust, Fuel psi gauge with regulator....pretty much everything to make the car fail...He didn't know what the hell he was looking at.

Find someone like that, and you will be good!!!!

I have never heard of a fuel pressurization portion of the test, could that be the fuel tank pressurization, as they do check the gas cap to determine if it seals or not. If the cap is not sealing / holding pressure, it is leaking / emitting into the atmosphere. A factory driver side oil fill extension & cap should get you by on that side, & maybe run a factory set-up on the passenger side? Or maybe visit Andrew's smog check station. HTH

Who's Andrew?
They hooked up a hose to my fuel tank and pinched the evap canister hose closed. I'm looking for my stock filler neck today. I don't have the factory stuff for the passenger side.

Boosted EvIL, ok, I forgot that they did that test, and I would check everything afterwords, as I have heard of them breaking the hose as most are old & brittle, & crack easily. Do you have to go to a "Test Only" station, as the certified "Test Only" stations generally don't do "pretests", as everything that they do goes through the computer and the stations that still do "pretests" generally are no longer certified to do "Test only" smog tests.

Garys right, You need to install the original breather pipe from the pass. side valve cover to the inlet bell on the turbo. The other part the test involves the fuel evap system. They put the fuel tank under a vacuum & test the tank seal, evap canister, vent pipes & hoses. One source of failure is the sending unit oring seal.If the fuel pump has ever been changed that seal better be in right. That's why it's important that whom ever works on your car has an understanding of the smog laws or you could have a problem. Coming up next any replacement cat converters have to be whats called a two way cat. No big deal there only more expensive.Headers, downpipes,K&N air filters, adj fuel regulators, open breathers, external wastegates all illegal. Now anything related to being gay Andrew can help you with as I have no experience with these matters.

CA Smog is way overkill. I passed the blow part...oh well. The fuel pump has been out. So my problem is probably there. But where can I get the evap stuff for the pass side valve cover? Can I just throw on a sealed style valve cover? I'd rather just take it to someone thats not anal.

I would find what your options are first. Does your smog notice require you to go to a "Test Only" station or not? If your pretest was done at a "Test Only" station and the info already sent into the state, you may not have the option of going to a non-"test Only" station, and if the info has already been sent into the state, any "Test Only" station that you will go to will probably look for the failed visual items.
Lou at Lou's Auto repair probably has about 20 or so sets of passenger side hoses & couplings and will probably hook you up for free. He can also re-verify your pre-test smog test, and maybe even recommend a test station.

I don't have a smog notice. The car is not registered in CA yet. I'm trying to get it registerd, but I have to pass SMOG to register it. The car has never been looked at by a TB guy. I just might take it to Lou to let him give it a good once over.

On a first time registration in the golden Republik of kali, I believe that you are allowed to go to either a "Test Only" station, or to a "Test and Repair" station. Lou should be able to hook you up on everything.

a over look

that is a good idea taking it to Lou i'll tell you this he's the right TB guy to pick.

Gary,I would be happy to help out but things in my area are real tight.I think that I would try & get it somewhere near legal. If there is some other option it should be talked about privately. This is a serious bust & never know who's reading this. If the valve covers are stock the orginal breathers shouldn't be a problem.I dont have any extra cause I used them up helping people out that failed.I get cars in with failure issues frequently.I would caution anyone not to throw their smog parts away thinking that they may never need them. Call me
& set something up to see what I can do. Lou

Nothing in any of my posts recommend anything other than going 100% legitimate and I would never recommend anybody do anything that they do not feel comfortable with. Other options referred to the two (2) different types of smog test stations, "test Only" & "Test & Repair". Nothing else was implied, and if anybody took it any other way, that was their choice as to how they interpreted my statement.
On second thought, you or anybody can always contact Joe Cheung, alias "gofstbuick", an administrator from this forum and listed up above in the global smog section and request his advise as to what choices are available and whether my post was appropriate to the original query. Joe is, I believe, top dog in the Consumer Relations division of the smog Test Stations section of the State of California.

Good advice & thanks Gary. I hope everyone reads this & use their heads when discussing anything illegal referring to the smog program.

I'm going to try to take her back to stock. Anybody got pis of the stock pass side valve cover breather setup? I may have the black plastic thingy, but I have no idea where to it goes.

The open PCV breather must be removed and restored back to a closed system to pass the visual portion of the smog test. Since your car is being registered in CA for the first time, you may take your car to any type of smog check station.
There is a new functional test of the fuel evap system. The test consist of plugging the line between the fuel evap cannister and fuel tank vent. Then the gas cap is replaced with an adapter that allows the fuel tank to be pressurized with nitrogen (an inert gas). This test test the integrity of the fuel evap vent line between the charcoal cannister and the gas tank.
If you have questions, email me.

I'm pretty sure that the hose to the canister is cracked considering that i've change almost every other hose.
I got an idea about my breather situation but I need some input. I'm thinking about getting some GN1 valve covers and simply capping both breather holes for smog. After smog put the breathers back in. This should work IF someone makes a oil cap for GN1 valve covers. And I get an excuse to get some new valve covers and breathers.
All input is appreciated.
