was tweeking my govenor, trying to get my shifts points where i want them, I installed an og 2004r in my 66 skylark 3.90 gears, I put the lighter spring from the the lighter weight and put on the heavier weight that i drilled two small holes in, shifts great 1-2-3-4 but when I go to wot it stays in first too long over 6000 too high for an engine this old but the 2-3 shift is at 5200 rpm perfect and 3-4 is at 5000 perfect , any ideas?

use a heavier 1/2 shiftspring,or shift tv bushing with a smaller land where tv up oil is pushing the valve against the governor pressure.

I dont have a spring on my 1-2 side of the govenor I put it on the heavy weighted side so my small weight has no spring, when the spring was on, it shifted way to early ?

small weight i believe control WOT shift.
Without the spring, its gonna be late,
I could be wrong though

i meant the spring in the valve body.your understanding of the governor is incorrect .with no spring the car can go back to 2nd from 4th at over 70 mph.not good.put the spring back and play with the v body or buy the mcss one.otto you are correct.

Put the spring on the small wt. & try it, then work from there by taking wt. from the small side of the gov.

put the orig spring on the lighter weight and i cut 4 coils off, shifting good about 4600 1-2 4200 2-3, wish there were an electronic trans controller for mor perfect shifts , one lesson that I did learn about this swap is that I will start with an ss core next time, do you guys think a ss gov would fine tune shifts and do you have to start allover with spring and weight swaping? I cant find a good gm number for the monte gov. they say obsolete?

This is what my gov. looks like getting to where I did. Most say a GN - SS gov. won't work I've got one just never tried it yet.

now the 2nd and third shifts are off.remove 2 coils from the 1/2 shift spring.i said heavier ,i meant lighten it up in my earlier post.

That's fine that helps the light P/T shifts & I'd say mostly the 1-2 up to about 20mph or so.

one wierd thing once in a great while ,I only noticed it when the tranny was hot was it seemed when it shifted from 3-4 that it was going back and forth 3-4 3-4 3-4 then as I speed up it just stayed in 4th this even happend when I turned off my lock up switch, I did change the sol.

Mine does it 2-3 like that once in awhile, either have to let off a bit or step on it.
