Hey guys....I purchased my '86 GN a couple years ago and along with it, came these monster Hooker headers that I am dying to get rid of. My motor is almost 100% stock and I've been told that the headers are killin' me, so I would like to junk the headers and replace them with some stock like aftermarket headers. I say stock "like" only 'cause I don't wanna deal with the stock header crack issue. Any ideas? I have no idea where to look...

Passenger side header seldom has any problems, you can try finding an ATR stainless steel replacement header for the driver side but since they are out of bussiness. Or just check out the ones from ArizonaGN.

I've got 2 ATR driver side replacment headers for sale, both have been welded. Not the prettiest things in the world but they don't leak and work. Also have a passenger side and a crossover if interested too. Just about all headers for these cars will crack at some time or another, with the exception of the TA headers and that's just because they're made out if much thicker gauge steel than anything else that's been out.

Thanks for the replies guys. So basically I'm understanding the the cracking is due mostly to heat, correct? That means that it's not a structural problem that eventually gives from incorrect torque or too much torque, etc...., right? Donnie, I have NO idea what you are looking for those headers or even what I would need to make it all work. I am new to the GN scene...totally....BUT, I do know from all my other cars, if you replace one side, you obviously replace the other....so, I'm assuming I would need both the driver's and the passenger side....My poor GN has been sitting idle for 2 years almost waiting for my fiance to finish school. Now that she's done, I'm orderin' all kinds of stuff. I just wanna make it as nice as possible. She's DAMN near mint condt'n and bone stock, with very few exceptions, and I'd like to keep it that way, so any suggestions are welcomed.....

The stock headers are a great design but it's what they are made of is the problem and that's why they crack.

If you had stock headers and replaced the driver side with the ATR replacement header nothing else has to be changed. It's a stock type replacement. But that will not apply to you since you have the Hookers on. But what you will need is a stock passenger side header a stock crossover and a stock or replacement driver side header. When it comes headers it comes down to a couple of things, 1) pony up the big bucks for a nice stainless set that'll run you $1000 shipped, 2) buy a nice used set that have been repaired for alot less than that. My car is one of the nicest you'll find ANYWHERE and I'm as picky as they come and I had no problem with a repared header on mine. Matter of fact I would say that 80% of TR's on the road with stock or stock replacemnets have been welded. Alot of times it's not how it looks but how it works, especially on something that when installed you can't even see.
