i wanted to know if there are any stock sounding roller cams out there? my buddy wants something that is stock sounding but doesnt want a flat tappet because his stock one went flat.

Something small like a 200/200 or similar shouldn't sound much different than a stocker.

Its the lifters not the cam for roller. ( engine click)
Mostly all roller cams sound stockish from the exhaust.

Probably NOT going to happen? :(

One street engine we built with a roller cam had custom made pushrods to fit the stock rockers instead of adjustable roller rockers, but it still did not sound like stock?

We have built lots of engines with flat tappet cams including a recent 10 sec. build, and we have yet to see an issue.

All cam manufacturers state do not use synthetic oil with flat tappet lifters.

so what small flat tappet cam to go with? and the sewing machine sound is what we are looking for lol.

Stock-style? My car came with a new (in 1999) Modern Muscle "210/205" flat-tappet and I had to yank it within 2 years due to the infamous #3 exhaust lobe going round. I replaced it with a tried and true Comp Cams "206" with Comp lifters. I replaced the worn-out engine block years later reusing the 206 & matched lifters and they are still in the car today.

Odd. My 215/220 roller with stock rockers has the stock 'sewing machine' sound under the hood... ( did bump the cubes and compression to offset the extra duration though)

... out the 3" single shot is another story.

Of course, the 208/202 Erson stick in your sig would be fine too. :)

the wraith: any time slips with your listed combo? mine is very similar...

When I ran the 206/210 roller from Full Thottle, it sounded like a stocker to me with the hood closed.

Look at the 4x4 lobes in the comp catalog. I've used them before. If you use them with the correct length pushrod and good lifters you should have a fairly quiet setup. Referring to cam lobes by their duration at .050" is silly.

i found this stock replacement cam at autozone its a melling.

the specs are
part no# SBC-14

INT. 193 282 .250 .400 104 HYD.
EXH. 196 276 .264 .422 110 HYD.

has anyone tried this?

There is no way in the cornbread hell I would risk my engine, turbo and oil cooler on a cam from VatoZone.

I think the lift on that one is a little larger than stock. Isn't stock lift in the high 3's?

Summit Racing Part Number: MEL-CL-SBC-14

Looks to be the same cam as VatoZone.. If you look closely at the Slumitt part number it reads Melling/cam-lifter/sbc-14

I feel like I'd want my car to sound the meanest if I did a cam swap, although I'd want one that still had good mannors.

^You can't have both. Good manners means you have just enough duration to get the job done (and the supporting static compression) and nothing extra.

Sounding the meanest means you have to put a 10,000RPM cam in an engine can can only spin 6,000. It'll lope like a sumbitch, but be a dog when you drive it.
