Stolen car recovered ... well maybe not!!!

My 84 TType was stolen in June of 2005 haven't heard anything about the car since. Even though I gave the Police some pretty good leads as to who the culprit was a guy, my dead beat daughter hung out with who also tried to sell me some hot parts, nothing came of it. Unfortunatley I did'nt have full coverage. Anyway last week pull up at the local parts store, and guess what my TType all primered down but nothing else changed. So I follow the guy to his neighborhood and find out where he lives. The next morning I get up call the cops and meet a police officer around the corner from the car. We go over there me armed with photos, receipts, and all the info needed to proove it was my car (the vin on the dash had been swapped to an 82 Regal). Even though the cop inconclusively agreed that the evidence for probable cause was overwellming he did not tow the car in. Instead he chose to let them keep the car and promise not to get rid of the car until an investigator got in touch with them so they could make "arrangements" to verify the cars vin. Even though I told him that the car had the original block and the last 6 no's of the vin were stamped on it and I knew exactly where it was. He proceeded to tell me that they did not have enough man power to pull the car at the moment and that sense they were cooperating it should'nt be a problem. Sounds like a lazy cop to me now what can I do about it. I did all the work for them and what do I get NOTHING.

We'll since GTA seems not to be a big deal in your parts, get your extra keys and go take it back before he dissapears. After all, its your car. What can they possibly charge you with? I wouldn't want to hear that the guy got "rid" of it before you could get it back. And punch him in the face for me.

there are other vin #brs on the car You should know where to look for them, I'd get the car back and store it somewhere till you can prove it. Hey as far as i'm concerned you just parked it away from your place and were picking it up if the thief comes out raving just bring a buddy or two withh you incase..

Since a report has already been filed I don't want to be obstructing justice (or injustice) in the coarse of there non investigation. Especially since the cop sad to leave it there. You know how it is in the real world the crooks have all the rights. And I don't have the keys the column has been replaced since they busted it to steal the car in the first place.

This is true. Legally you are still the owner of the car and you have the right to take it back. I would recover it and then report to the police that the car has been recovered and that they can come and investigate at your convenience. They dont have enough man power? Thats BS! I would simply have a friend pick it up with a recovery truck.

If you went under the car and new for shore that the numbers on the block match then call the police again and tell them to have some one in the precinct that deals with auto crime cases come down and check the car.Where I live the police have a auto crime unit, I don't think it should be any different where you live.

Strap a tow hook and pull it to a tow lot. Varify your vin number from the frame and forget about it.

If it was my car, i sure as F wouldnt let it sit infront of someone elses house even if the insurance company didnt pay for the car.

If it is your car then I do not know why there would be any problem with you having it towed - afterall, the only reason the cops did not take it was because they were short handed, so give'em a hand!

I know I'm about to sound like a dick...but you need to get off your ass and go get your damn car back NOW!! If some cop gave me some ****ing run-around bull**** like that I would have busted the column and driven it off right in front of him. Get some buddie's and a tow truck and get your car back. If I were in your position and my friends found out I was sitting on my hands doing nothing they'd go take the car without me.

Honestly I have thought about doing just what all of you have suggested but I'm not sure if I would violate any laws by doing so myself. Sure it is my car, I kmow it, you all know it. But the case has crossed county lines and I'd be hindering the investigation of the sorry a** county that I found the car in. Had I found him in my county the police would have pulled it in right then, but I did'nt. Now I'm up @ 3am everyday not being able to sleep just like the day it was stolen. I thought I was over it and I was until I saw the car again. But as it turned out the young kid who is driving the car did not steal it his parents bought the car for him from a back yard mechanic who was working on the car for the alledged theif after months of abuse. He sold the car to them for 900 bucks. Needless to say not everyone can work on a turbo buick much less a hot air and the car runs like a** probably a blown head gasket. But everything is still intact. I'm going first thing this morning and talk to the supervisors in my county and his this AM I hope I can expidite this situation if I don't get any results I wil have to take drastic measures myself. Probably end up in jail for stealing my own sh*t back. Go figure the law abiding tax payer gets the shaft again.

Like the story I was once told from my friend in Brazil;

There was an altercation (noise disturbance) which he called in at 4:00 am and the police said: “Not enough police available in the area. We will be there in about 4-6 hours.”

So, he picks up the phone and dials the “911” (equivalent) and stated: “Someone just got shot!”
Within 1-2 minutes, the police was on site. They asked him why he made such a call and filed such an false report (Yeah, I know it’s a crime) and he stated: “I thought you just told me there were not enough police officers in the area”.

Moral of the story: You may need to get creative to be heard and taken seriously. In this country, it takes but "one call" from a lawyer usually.

Sounds like you should NOT tow the vehicle. You are right: you could find yourself in trouble if one small detail was overlooked. However it would be wise to meet ASAP with the county prosecutor and take all your evidence since the police are ignoring you. If you have your ducks in a row, he will most likely help unless he is related to the thieves. A nice fruit basket for the ladies at the front counter would not hurt either after you meet with him. They would say nice things about you and probably follow up with him after you leave if you share your story. What is $20 since you are liable to get your car back?

I can empathize with your situation. I had my 86 T stolen back in 1991. The cop should have called for an impound right away.

If you don't get a decent response from your local police, call the State Police. They are usually much more professional and better trained than the local good old boys.

BTW, A partial VIN is stamped on the original engine block, transmission case, and the driver's side exterior of the frame. The frame VIN is nearly impossible to see without lifting the body and cleaning the area. I've parted several Regals and found the VIN there on every one.

I would also check on it to make sure its still there. Since the car is evidence, they may be looking to get rid of it. Even if the current person "bought" it, they may fear receiving stolen property charges. They may be totally innocent, but you never know.
If I was in that kind of situation, the car would be on its way home with me as soon as the cop was gone.
And how much effort would it really have taken them to tow it...really. Or even put a boot on a wheel to keep it where it was.

i dont know about your state but as a cop in jersey, if it is definately your car and you have no doubt about it you can legally go get it. there is nothing the police can do.

You may not have the ignition key, but how about the door key? If you could have opened the door in front of the cop maybe things would be different now. I think Kirban once told a story about his 67 Vette getting stolen. He found the door at a swap meet- his key fit it! Maybe take pics of the car where it is now with the "owner's" house in background. Just in case car disappears. Sounds like the police should investigate the guy who sold it to the current owner. He may have more "hot" cars for sale. Can you do a carfax on the VIN on the dash? Results might be interesting.
