Im wondering if I should use a synthetic oil like mobile1 or stay with the original oil....anybody experience anythinhg differnt with synthetic oils? I have heard alot of GN owners will not use synthetic however I have heard that it was better to use?? reference this site www.89tta.com any feedback???

Synthetic oil is the best to use in my opinion. But don't be surprised if you find an oil leak if used on a higher mileage motor, use it on my 44k mile TTA and so far no leaks...used on my 214k Mustang and it was everywhere.

I use it just because of how much heat the turbo produces. The synthetic is resiliant to the heat better than conventional oils. From the factory they came with synthetic.

Uhh..NO..factory fill on TTA's, and all the Buicks was NOT Synthetic!!
Really. For some reason I thought they were filled with synthetic. Learn something new everyday.

maybe you were thinking new Corvette's

I'm of the opinion that a new motor should use dino oil until it has 10k or more miles on the odometer. Anything sooner than this and you risk wiping lobes off the cam from the syn oil being too slick. I took a poll some time back asking people that have wiped lobes on a new cam. If my memory serves me right, I think something like 75+% of the responders were using syn oil. Just food for thought.

oil

Yes the TTA came with Mobil 1 10w 30 from PAS. When My Parents perchased 1077 new, the dealer stated that the oil change would cost more because they would need to use a synthetic. We used to do our own oil changes on the car, so I remember my father asking what type of oil it was and the service manager stated mobil 1 10-30. I think ASC may have used mobil 1 in the GNX also(maybe one of you GNX guys can confirm) but the ZR-1 was the first to advertise mobil 1 from the factory, latter in the 90's SLP did the same with the FireHawk. I think a lot of the tuner cars at the time used mobil 1(Callaway, Saleen, ASC, SLP, PAS.) Also a month or two back someone on the other site stated that they talked with Jeff Beitzel at a car show and Beitzel confirmed that PAS used mobil one in the TTA. http://www.turbobuicks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49935

I use advance autoparts 10w40 conventional. Its 1.60 a quart.. AC delco oil filter.

Never wiped a cam, never hurt a turbo, never had an oiling issue.. And I beat on my car harder than the majority on this site.

I do change it regularly.. very regularly.

Depends how you drive the car. If your always beating on it.. use conventional. If you drive it like a 92 Toyota Camry.. and are expecting to get 300K miles from your engine.. synthetic is for you.

syn oil

Hi,
I don't think our cars were originally supplied with a synthetic oil, but it might have been a good idea. Anytime you have a hard working , turbocharged system, synthetic oil will be a good idea.I hope you're always thinking about this!

yes - our cars DID come with synth oil from the factory. have any of you read the owner's manual for the tta car? it specifically states that dino oil should not be used in the turbo motor. the heat and wear from the turbo motor is the reason for this. they also re-iterate that you should change the oil every 3000 miles on these motors.

I saw a thread about oils just a few weeks ago with some very good info in it. Suprisingly, there's much better oils out there than Mobil 1.
Look at the links in this thread

The important additives for a good slick oil is Moly, Zinc, and Phospherous. Mobil 1 doesn't do that well for the Moly rating. I usually use a combination of syn and conventional oil, there are good properties in both for engines that are beat on, and for sitting up weeks at a time not being ran is why I use a blend...with that said, the oil I've been using is crap for those additives according to the chart in the link, but I've never had a bearing or cam lobe issue in the 15 years of owning my GN, but I may be switching to something else the next oil change :)

Jeff Beitzel told me himself that all TTAs left PAS with Mobil-1 fillup.
And whats more accurate than from the horses mouth himself. Any other interesting info Jeff shared with you?

TTA supplement mentions nothing of synthetic oil.

Keep in mind the Mobile 1 oil of today is not the same as when our cars were new. The good high pressure lubricant additives (moly/zink/phosphorous) needed for a flat tappet cam have decreased over the years due to their contribution to emissions. New cars have roller tappets so its not as vital. A racing oil like VR1, Quaker Q or Royal Purple will have these additives.

How about Red Line? Does it have the proper level of additives?

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, Redline has the most according to the link I posted above in an earlier post.
