TC Install

Just finished putting the tranny back in after installing new TC. I have never installed one these before and neglected to put oil in the converter. After reading on here a bit, I see you are supposed to fill the converter with oil. Is this completely necessary?

I very seldom put any fluid in and have had no problems at all. I used to work at a trans shop for 4 years and they never taught me that either. I will say it won't hurt but I would not pull it if you forgot. IMO not cruitial.

I agree^^^, I just put about 4qts in dipstick to pan, fire it up on jack stands and fill to proper level while cycling thru gears, engine idling (R- & 1-2-3-4) gears to remove air. Converter will fill quickly.

There are items (bearings, thrust washers, etc) in the convertor that need lubrication so no oil in the convertor will be like a dry start. This is even worse on a new trans.

Putting 1/2 quart or so in the converter before installing it isn't a requirement but it is a good idea.

Did you happen to notice if any fluid was in the bottom of the converter at all? Some companies will put just a little fluid in the bottom of the converter before shipping or will lube the bearings with grease. If either of these were done, it's ok to start it without adding additional fluid. The converter will get fluid very quickly once the engine is turning over.

If your not sure if it was totally dry inside, it would be a good idea to pull it and get some fluid in it.

Don't beleive I seen one that did not have some fluid in the bottom.
Sometimes people get over carried away with things.

the converter company had to spin it to balance it, I would think it would have some prelube in it for that.

I think it will be fine.

Have you contacted the converter company or vendor? Is it a used converter or a new one?

Pull the ecm plug, spin the engine over and the pump will fill the converter. Start it up, and check the fluid. Done deal..

Thanks for your input guys. It was a Pat's performance converter. Talked to the local tranny shop, he also said there should be some assembly lube in the converter and will be fine to just put oil in the trans. and fire it up. Should fill converter quickly.
