Had the opportunity to work on a GN with TCI 6X transmission and I have to say I'm not impressed. The gears are so tight together the thing constantly shifts. Never in one gear long enough to lay down the power.

I had a similar experience years ago with a Richmond 6 speed transmission in a 78 trans am. Driving the car I would only use 2-4-6. 1-3-5 were useless.

If anyone is planning on using a 4L80E you might want to rethink. The money can be better spent in other areas IMO.

I was considering this 2 years ago when the latest 200 I had burned up. Then I was talked into the 400. Now I can easily see why your experience would be true. 3 gears is fine. What was I going to do with 3 more? I was wondering if I made the wrong decision. This helps.

I've never heard of a 4l80e being a 6 speed. All I've seen including my 2500 GMC Sierra are 4 speeds, really a turbo 400 with an overdrive. Is this some new mod?

TCI has one and at least one other company. Gear spacing is too close. 4L80E would be great, Turbo 400 with OD. 2.97, 2.31, 1.57, 1.18, 1.00, and 0.75
Ratios are too close for us to use. PCTS is the other company.

PCS makes the valve body and controller and TCI just rebadges it. Same for the Fast dash, EGT module and accelerometer modules for the XFI.

They start off with a 4l80 and have a special valve body and controller to manipulate the clutches and bands to give you 2 additional gears from what I understand..

Don't you get paddle shifter too? How would it be for auto crossing or road course?

At $6000+ dollars I don't think I will be trying it out anytime soon.

The trans comes standard with gear ratios of 2.97, 2.23, 1.57, 1.18, 1.00, 0.75, and 1.76 reverse. They install a 2.97 1.57 gear set in place of the stock 2.48 1.48 gear set. What is happening here is they apply the OD clutch in 1st and 2nd for a .75 ratio change hence the extra 2 gears. They use a 6 clutch pack in OD for added strength. This new gear set and the operation of the 6 speed will make the trans very strong. Running either gear set as a 5 speed would work much better for most applications..

I looked into doing this to the 200-4R a few years ago, but it will need an electronic valve body and controller. Maybe in the future.

Very innovative. This is what keeps us going. That's why after almost 30 years, we can still run with some of the most exotic high performance cars on the planet. It just never stops. And that's why I will always own a Turbo Regal for as long as I can get a fuel for it to run on.

Dave, I know as much about a trany as I know about Theoretical Quantum Physics. But can this same theoretical extra gear be applied to a TH400 as well? I understand a 4L80 is like a 400 with OD.......But what about a real 400 with OD? Can this be done?

No, you need OD to get the extra ratios.

Actually, the valvebody is a TCI designed part. PCS says that they have a 6 speed 4L80E valvebody now, but I haven't seen any in operation. The original 6X TCU's were made by PCS, but TCI has used their own EZ-TCU for the last four years.
Thanks,
Kevin

Did someone say "controller"...... ?
