As you can see in my cars build up I've got a TE-44 & I have been considering going to a bigger turbo. I'm able to run 24 lbs. of boost everyday w/ 93 & alchy & was wondering id I'd see a worthwhile gain going with a 60, 61, or ? I know that I'd have probably have to get a bigger stall if I upgrade. Car is street driven 99% of the time & I don't want to hurt driveability. I also plan on eventually porting the heads & going w/ a slightly larger cam, but I won't do that until the motor HAS to be gotten into.Hopefully not anytime soon. My goal is to have a 11 sec. car on the street with dr's & 11.50's or faster at the track w/ slicks.

More flow! Bigger...... to me means stepping over the two you have listed and get a 45A or 70. The increase you see with those over the 44 may not be what you expect. If you want to go big.....go big:D

What size a/r housing do you run on the te-44? If it is the garret .63, you can step up to the pte .63 ar which is basically a .82 garret which should pick you up .2/2 mph.

Ofcourse with the bigger turbo and stall the car will be faster at identical boost levels to what you are running with your current combo, but you may sacrifice some street manners with the 9' convertor. Also with a bigger turbo, you will most likely need more injector.

I know it's a .63, but not sure which one. I bought it from John Craig, I guess I'll go outside & see if I can tell. I didn't know there were different ones. I'll post back in a minute.

OK, my housing has Garrett on it, so maybe I'll think about that PTE .63 housing if it'll get me to where I want to go.

Darkside,

You alreadey have a mid 11 second car! The larger exhaust housing will help at the track. You may not care for it on the street though. I like it with my 49. Your build is almost identical to my Ltd.. Adding a big mouth to the IC will help also.

You have the combination. That 49/44 with a D5 converter, alcohol, enough fuel and right chip is all you need. IMO, forget the bigger turbo dial in what you already have!

You should be able to run into the 11s with alky on the 44. If you step up in turbo size, you will most likely need a torque converter to match unless you already have a 3000+ converter.

I'm going with a Craig rebuilt 62 and a 3K stall converter and a rebuilt tranny.

I'll let you know if it';s the right combo. for high 11's in street trim.

I run the PTE 51 and 24psi. on alky. with 20* timing.

Prolly low 12's in the winter. :D

We shall see this spring.

Got a 3K stall and new tranny in the GN that will be getting the PTE51 turbo so that should be fast on alky. too. :)

Can't wait for test and tune or track rentals.

I agree that you already have the parts to run what ya want. Save your $$ and just dial it in..;)

Basically have the same combo as you with the GN, I see no problems going mid 11's now that I added the powerplate, V4 and control arms/ATR bar, but probably using race gas to do it.

The Darkside....

I've got a TE-44 and TE-60...
Both are great turbos for street/strip use in my opinion and I know will get you the slips your looking for.

I say if you've got some extra cash invest in a Direct Scan or similar tuning aid.

Thanks for all your input. I think I'll stick with the TE-44 & tune her in. I believe it's running really well right now. It has little problem breaking the tires loose from a 40 mph punch. The tires are just BFG 235-60's, but it still feels strong. I think I just might need some Nitto's or drag radials to reach those 11's on the street.
Anyone with else experience in this, don't hesitate to give your input. I especially like the thumbs up stories supporting the TE-44,(Cause I can save my money & buy an EGT gauge).

Thanks again, The Darkside:cool:

I'm happy with my TA-49 with the alcohol. If I put slicks on the car I could probably run mid 11's.

I don't think I'm going out on a limb here saying it will be very difficult to run 11's in street trim as you have described it with the alky and pump gas.

Especially with a 44, 49, or 51 turbo.

Nittos will help for sure, but not enough.

Maybe ported irons and the same turbo. :)

hoooray for bench racing! if I put some slicks on I'd run 9s on my stocker :P

Yup, it's pretty amazing how many guys on this board run 11's on the street, and shred the tires at 50 MPH, on pump gas and stock heads...

:D

215/65/15 snow tires do shred at 50mph. :)

11's ain't easy even with race gas, slicks and 25 psi. in a 44, 49, and 51 in a stocker. Really. :(

Watched lots of people try while I was trying street trim.

I love my TE-44. 25psi on C-12, 26" et drags, and withOUT locking the converter -- see sig.

I wouldn't say 50mph, but It shreads the 275/60 from a 25mph roll with 17-18psi of boost (pump gas, no alcy).
