I bought this turbo from a friend. It is not new... but still on a running car. It doesn't smoke.... but does have a minimal amount of shaft play. I figured it would be a good starter turbo. Currently my car is stock except for upgraded fuel pump and soon to be upgraded valve springs. I plan on complementing it with 60lb high impedance injectors, 3" THDP with test pipe, cold air kit, and a TurboTweak chip. I am trying to decide if I can hold off on the converter upgrade. What do you guys think? It suppossedly spools faster with the .63 housing...... dunno if it needs as much converter as a stock exhaust housing one or not.

Any thoughts?

Second stage of upgrades will include a RAZOR alcohol injection kit and turn up the boost some.

What kind of times should I expect with a full weight street car with decent traction? I guess I am hoping eventually for some mid 7's in the eighth.... mid 11's in the quarter......probably low 20's on boost (with alcohol inj kit).

What kind of times if I limit the boost to 15-16 lbs.....?

All of this on pump gas of course......

I wouldn't buy it without a convertor. Will be really laggy on the street, especially with the PTE housing.

I also wouldn't change anything until baselining the car with the stock turbo etc. The stock turbo is tough to beat on the street, especially if you're running alky.

I agree. I think you'll be disappointed without a converter. I changed from a 3000 to a 3200 because it wasn't much fun on the street.

Yep, with anything less than 3000-3200 stall will not be much fun taking off. Get a convertor and mid-7s and mid-11s will be easy with the other mods.

Converters a must. I went with a 61BB with the larger compressor housing and it's still laggy. I've sinced purchased a 3200 protourqe...

I have a pte 54 (similar) and I drove my car around for about a month with the stock converter. It didn't hit full boost until the middle of 2nd gear. I do have an .85 housing though. My car runs 12.0 in street trim on alky with a 2.1 60 foot. So with slicks it would easily run mid 11s on pump gas and alky. It took a true 3500 stall converter to spool it with the .85 housing.

Update..... turbo has the .63 Garrett housing... not the PTE .63....

Update.....

I just picked the turbo up...... It has the Garrett .63 turbine housing.... not the PTE.......

I think that will be better for me because I am running a stock long block.... on a street driven car.......

With that said..... how much stall will it need now?

Eventually I want to go to a TE45A with ported heads and intake...... How much converter for this combo? I guess in a perfect world.... I want to buy my converter that will be good for either turbo..... but I am prepared to just buy the perfect stall converter for the TE61.... and have it re-stalled when I go up to the TE45A... (which might be a year or more).

Oh.... I am looking at a Precision Industries 9-1/2" lock-up converter..... the Vigilante...... I had one for my low 13 second 700R4 S10 Blazer.... and loved it....... now I want one for the Buick..... just need to determine what to tell them for the stall.... or what I want......

Do you know what size exhaust wheel the turbo has?
a GT6131E needs about 3k stall to be good, a regular GT6152 will need at least a 3200 stall, or there abouts.

Te61

I don't know what size exhaust wheel it has. Are there any markings or visual indications that I might check? I assume it is your ordinary run-of-the-mill TE61..... but am not sure. The guy I bought it from said it was already on his car when he bought it. (like 6 monts ago... is when he bought the car)

I would get a "0-pump" Vigilante to use with either turbo if buying a converter now. I have used stock D-5's with great success using the identical turbo you just bought.

K.

I have that turbo and if you get the Precision I'd get the multi disc where it would hold up. You definately need at least 3200 stall IMO. That's what I have and It's borderline in my opinion.

But for combo, I'm similar with TE61, 3" DP, MSD 50's, and Razor's alky.

I went 7.29 1/8 mile Friday night on MT Drag Radials at 25psi of boost.

Sure was fun :)

Well.... bought a used Vigilante "0-pump" .... seems the most popular choice for the turbo I bought. Installed the converter Thursday night.... went to the track last night.... still with stock turbo... but the new converter...... boost builds like a light turning on..... went 8.46 in the eighth with the mods in my sig.

TE61 will be on in the next week or two.... along with 60# Motrons.... extender extreme chip....translator.... LS1 MAF..... 3-1/2" MAF pipe....and big mouth cold air kit......

Then it will be back to the track....
