Being new to boosted 3.8's I've been reading as much as I can. Often reading the classifieds and a few other places here I read about folks who are "going back to stock"
My question is, why? I read the signatures with the list of mods, some unbelievable in terms of 1/4 times and money spent. I wonder what happened? is it not fun anymore, is it too un-streetable at some point in a build up? What?

For those of us on the lower rungs of the ladder on our way up, we'd like to know why are some coming back down?

...

Cars are worth more as stock. Nobody will pay anywhere near what we have into these things for a modded car. So, sell off the aftermarket parts and install the stock parts and come out ahead of the game. Well, I guess not ahead, just not as bad of a hit.

more ya push the sooner its goin to break ... Melissa had a mid 11 no brainer set up for 10 years !! car never missed a beat .. now she is running in the 9s.. still very streetable (small turbo) .. Just have to make sure ya don't detonate it .. NO knock and it "should" be ok for a while .. how long ??? don't know but we will find out   OH ya ..stock cars are worth more $$$... Always has been and always will ;)

So, I'm reading that this is usually a move towards selling a car?

Think Dan summed it up pretty well. When it comes to resale value on these cars the more you spent on them (mods) the more money you lose! Don't believe me?? Check out some of the Stage2 cars in the for sale section that are selling for right around 20K when most of them easily have double that money into them! My opinion is if you don't care about the resale value and just want to enjoy the car then modify it to your heart's content. Seems like the cars that are lightly modded with low miles still bring some good $$$. These cars are very reliable and fun when they are in the 12's down to about the mid-low 11's. Once you want to get into the 10's they can get more expensive and less reliable. Same thing can be said for plenty of other cars out there. My personal opinion is you should be realistic with how much money you can spend on the car, meaning if you don't have a lot keep the car closer to stock and be happy with a 12-11 sec ride.:)

So if I put my 84 back to stock and sell the parts I will be better off? Its a good thing that I don't plain to ever part with this thing.

Any car that is modded loses value. In our eyes a stage 2 car is the cats azz. But find someone to give the 50,000 you have in it and that is low balling it. good luck. When i was in florida for the street car shootout I saw a 1970 gsx that was back halved. I wanted to punch the guy. He bought the car new.By the time you put that back to stock you might break even Anyways if I wanted a stage 2 car I would come right to this site and buy the last one i saw for 30,000 and save myself 30,000 in the process. I kinda did the same thing with my car but I am going to keep it so I dont care.

Well I never plan to sell mine so I guess resale value means zilch in my books. Now I am slowing going back to stock only because I've learned a lot over the past 20 years. I'm leaning towards stock appearing. First off the only reason I did a mod was because I could. If I opened up a rulebook and it said it was okay than most likely I bought a part and went a tad faster with it. I wasn't one of the jerks who bought everything in the Kenne-Bell catalog and slowed my car down but I was able to figure out what was a good bolt on compared to snake oil. But than the Time Bandits hit me pretty hard in the late 90's. You know everytime the latest greatest go fast car hit the showroom it just made going fast in the GN a little harder. It made winning a lot harder.Seems like the car was obsolete before it was 10 years old. You know draining the checking account and spending all your free time on a car just isn't worth it in the long run. I dont need a 10 second ride(not that the GN ever broke out of the 11's) and 12's on pump gas will beat just about everything out there on the streets today. How hard is to get a TR into the 12's nowadays? A lot easier than it was 20 years ago. And a lot cheaper. Thanks to all of those who hacked up their cars in quest of the 9 second run. I learned from your mistakes but most importantly I learned that once the roll cage went in there was no turning back.
