'87 GN, 115K miles, just bought it less than 3 weeks ago, has been sitting a year or so.
Didn't want to shift from 1-2 under 3/4 or more throttle, so I did the TV cable adjustment from gnttype.org. No improvement...I did hear the click and see it move slightly when I depressed the gas pedal to the floor after pushing in the metal button. Last night, after reading some TV stuff on this board, I tried moving the cable back a couple of clicks. It still didn't want shift 1-2, but also seemed to be slipping, so I assume that I moved it too far back.
Do you guys have any tips on what I should check next? I don't think the tranny is slipping (when the TV was adjusted out) but it definitely doesn't want to shift right. I have a pretty good tranny shop I have used, but I wanted to try to learn a little about this before I give up and take it in.
Thanks,
Jeff

Help....

I don't want to put it in the shop if I can try some things at home first...
Any ideas welcomed!
Jeff

Have you verified that you have a properly calibrated (BRF) transmission? Look at the tag on the tail section of the transmission.

Your symptoms are indicative of a possible mis-calibrated unit.

Also, what rpm are you running up to? (You are looking at a good aftermarket tach, I hope.) Have the engine valve springs been replaced?

I just got the car, so I haven't put a tach in it yet...just trying to get it ready for inspection. Sounds like it's banging around 5000 RPM when trying to shift. I have considered the valve spring possiblity after reading about that on this Forum.
Can you tell me more about the calibration? Is this something involving the governor, line pressure, TV adjustment etc or is this some electronic calibration? The car is all original (even has factory airbox and MAF hose) so hopefully the tranny is original as well.
I'll check the tail section for a tag.
Thanks for the reply,
Jeff

Jeff, I too am having this same problem. I have a Mike Kurtz built 200r4 with a art carr 9" non l/u. The car shifts so hard at part thottle, it rips 2nd gear everytime. But when I go to the track, I have to let off the throttle before it will change from 1 to 2. What is the deal about the valve springs? If they are weak, will that limit the rpm's enough to keep it from shifting correctly. Someone please help.

I'll check the tail section for a tag.
The transmission is hydro-mechanical, no electronic controls for shifting. The factory valve body and governor are special to the turbo Regals and don't do so well if someone's put in the wrong governor or swapped in the wrong valve body.

What did you see on your tag?

Jeff,

My GN was doing the same as yours, no low RPM shifts. Turns out that my governor spring had come out of the governor. Might want to check that out. Drop the pan and pull the cover that houses the governor (4 bolts). You might find the spring has come off. I did. It was then "pinned in" by Bruce. :) Worked great!

Currently, I have some other trans issues. :(

My Tag Numbers

OK, I've finally gotten some time to get under the car to fix the cracked header and the starter, so I got the numbers off the tag.
This is a small squarish tag riveted to the passenger side tail section.

I have a feeling this is not a BRF, since there are none of those letters on the tag...please confirm.
Thanks,
Jeff

check the gov

Since you found out that you don`t have a BRF but an OG do you suppose the previous owner could`ve slipped in a GN gov & not the VB. Just another option to explore I guess.

OG!!!! My God!!!! :(

Unless it has been RECASED you will continue to have problems. Not that this is it but it sure sounds like a stock og vb with a gn govenor. This set up will do EXACTLY as you described. Time to pull pan and investigate :(
