The "good" 200 4Rs
I believe the list below covers all the "good" 200 4Rs. If anyone knows different please respond--make my junkyard visits shorter.
Code Model
BRF 86-87 Grand National Servo casting # = 94 Lipseal servo w/ strongest spring
TAF* 89 Anniversary T/A Servo casting # = 94 Lipseal servo w/ strongest spring
CZF 86-87 Monte Carlo SS Servo casting # = 92 Lipseal servo w/ 2nd strongest spg
OZF/KZF 85-7 442 , 83-4 Hurst Olds Servo casting # = 92 Lipseal servo w/ 2nd strongest spg
Only buy transmissions produced after 1/84; avoid 88 models; 90 models are the best.
I think the only 90 model 200 4R was the Caddy but I do not know what the letter code is an have not seen it posted in a chart. Anyone know the 200 4R code for 90 Caddy?
The question is really which valve bodies are the best for high performance because all the 200 4R internals are the same for each given year--there is a slightly stronger input shaft that was used after late '87 (see Strenthening the 200 4R). We all know a D-5 is a D-5 no matter what it was used in so everything comes back to shift control.
The OG coded valve bodies have all small-bores and it would seem that they could be upgraded with springs or something to perform like a CZ or BR--but I do not know that for sure.
Hey, Bruce has nothing but time, right? He should do it!
By the way for you newbies and even you old wizs, search the board and much of what you seek is already there.
