Anyway to tell if a turbonetics turbo is a BB or non-BB just by looking at it?

very easy to distinguish... simply look into the oil return hole in the center section, if you see a little shiny pin hole inside the center section it is BB, if not.... it is not.

OK. How about the gold insert on the inside of the compressor housing? What does that mean? Anything?

I thought the gold backing stands for a big shaft turbo?
