What octane levels are available in UNLEADED race fuel.
I was at a Sunoco station today and the guy had 100 and 114 unleaded. I didn't know there was such a thing as 114. Anybody ever use this stuff.

Matt

I've heard of 104 but never 114.

That would be a nice alternative for sure.

Rage,
You have to buy it in 5 gal cans at $42 but I think you get some of that back when you return the can. Not exactly cheap.

Matt

ya that stuff they sell is a rip off. think about it...thats like $9.00 a gallon. that 114 is leaded. the highest unleaded is 104. i can get 117 octance vp c-16 for under $8.00 a gallon at columbus oil in swansea.

A local station sells 100 UL for $3.75, 104 UL for $4.50 and 118 LEADED for $5.25. I have never heard of 114 UL.

Sunoco 109 unleaded

In our area, we have the choice of Sunoco unleaded race gas in 2 different grades, 100 and 109 octane. The 109 has MTBE added to raise the "effective" rating to 109.

The 109 seems to work well especially when mixed with the crummy local pump gas.:)

Pump gas also includes, road taxes.
Race gas doesn't, that's the reason it's illegal to use on public highways.

Matt; pro racing fuels makes a 114 UNLEAD!!!! Yes. It go's by the name MARK5. Their phone# is 905-858-9320 I don't think they have a website and if they do I could'nt find it? Hope this you/us out. Mike :p :p :p

I dunno. I'd be REAL careful about that claim. I don't know anybody that has actually been successful at getting unleaded up that high in octane.

Dave; Give them a call PRO RACING FUELS #905-858-9320 and let us know if it's FACT OR FICTION?

It is possible. The specific gravity on an unleaded fuel with that high of an octane rating is probably going to be way outside what you'd normally run, and would require some severe timing adjustments. It probably burns so slow the timing advance you'd have to use would be insane.

What about the claim if you use leaded fuel in computer controlled cars it will clog up your O2 & cat, any theory's on that one? Although I have used turbo blue on my 87 vette with no ill effects.

Hey guys, I went to the Hiperfuels site and after looking at the various fuels the guy at the station is on crack. It is 104 unleaded GT Plus. I knew it was too good to be true.

Why is this stuff not EPA approved? Is it not good for the car if you run a cat?

They do sell 110 LEADED at the pump though if anybody is interested.

Not likely. There is NO correlation between octane and burning speed, and certainly not in the direction you imply. Racing fuels actually burn faster than street gas. Think you would want to run a "slow burn" fuel in an engine turning 10,000 rpm? If you want, you can go here:Gasoline FAQs and read about octane.

where is that? i'm paying $4.75 for 110 at a local place right now.

and higher octane doesnt' so much burn slower, but it does require more pressure to ignite. in a sence its like running an almost diesel.85 barely has to be compressed to work properly, i think it can run right at as low as 6:1 compression. if you take some 116 and put that in a super low compression engine it pobably won't even run, and if it does it won't run good. on the other side take a high compression engine, 13:1 or something running lots of boost. put 85 in that and you'll get detonation before you even get past 1/4 throttle. thats why there is high octane fuel. go look around on the net, there are a lot of things out there that say what i'm trying to say, that are much easier to read.

vp makes some fuel over 104 leaded, up to 109. but thats research octane, not the r+m/2, which is what were used to seeing. and the r=m/2 is only 105.

High compression requires high octane, but high octane doesn't require high compression, and high octane fuel is NOT harder to ignite than lower octane. It has two general qualities. One, it is more knock resistant, and two, it costs more. The link I provided above is a good one, it is a scientific site, with references, but not too hard to understand if you just skip over some of the chemistry. There is a LOT of octane misinformation on the web, for example at Grape Ape.
