Tonight I scored an 87 GN 200r4 trans that was last run about 3 years ago. The gent I got it from had it rebuilt and ran it about 150 miles prior to detonating his motor. The trans and 109 block (got both for $500  ) have been sitting inside the gutted passenger compartment the majority of the time. I need to replace my current trans ASAP because I lost OD, rev, and slips in every gear. Prior to having this one installed what inspection measures should I take to make sure its not gonna leak or give me too many probs?

Since it's out put both front and rear seals in it as well as a new dipstick seal. Then take the pan off and check the filter or get one of chris' bottom feeder kits.

so we got the trans in and i had a few probs. i have no downshifts at WOT and the trans shifts waaaaaaay too early. folks here were saying i might have a stuck tv valve, non brf VB, bad tcc solenoid, or bad governor. im droppin the pan this weekend to inspect and replace suspected components. if the VB is correct, which i think it is, then im gonna pop my old governor and tcc sol from my old trans in it. here's a few pics of the gov i pulled from the old one.

TV cable adjustment in spec? Tension (or lack of) on that cable has alot to do with symptoms you described. Does it feel tight like a guitar string at TB?

That '65 Sting Ray makes a good background picture drop BTW! Does it still have the one year only 396? I had a '66 Roadster years ago 327/300 and also had the factory side exhaust like yours.

The TV cable is nice and tight at the TB after making the adjustment to spec. I played with the adjustment a little bit fore and aft a few clicks but there was no improvement. Prior to dropping the pan, Im gonna start the car and pull the TV cable 25-30 or so times to see if its stuck. Im mean honestly Im gonna have to drop the pan anyway to replace the TCC solenoid because its not working. The ecm/sol fuse is good but there is no action at the solenoid when I tested it. The early shift prob seems to be pointing at the governor. The guy I got the trans off of said he had the "shift points adjusted" so he very well could have switched governors to a non brf unit. We shall see this weekend when I get her up in the air.

Thanks for the comments on the Vette!!! Its been in our fam for years and I am one lucky guy to inherit that car. Its an original 396 car but we pulled it years ago and put that block in storage. Right now a 502 is resting between the rails followed by a M22 four speed with 4.11s putting those horses to ground. Its a fun car to drive.
