To start out with I'm aware that the PI multi disc converters tend to be on the noisy side, but I need some opinions determining what is going on with this one. At start up my converter sometimes makes an nasty rattle/knock sound for just a second or two, I'm assuming this is untill it fills with fluid. This sound is especially prevelant if the car is up on ramps overnight or in the trailer at an angle....again I'm assuming that when it's up on ramps even more fluid is allowed to drain out. Now this is where it gets odd. The other day while the car was level I was messing around with the throttle while under the hood. When I would blip or rock the throttle at constant rate off idle, I would hear this metalic knock/bang sound comming from the lower block/converter area. At first I thought it sounded like a rod knock, but after further investigation I determined that it was comming from the converter. I can duplicate this sound over and over if I rock the throttle. I can also cause the converter make an odd sound if I rev the motor up fairly high then immediately let off the throtle and let it idle down. The sound is best described as a metalic rattle/growl....kinda sounds like a bad version of the air backflowing through the MAF pipe after you let out of the go fast pedal real quick. This sound is also only present for just a second then goes away. Other than these two situations all else sounds normal with the thing, not to mention it works operates just fine. I had a single disc years ago that was as quiet as could be, so I'm curious if these sounds I'm hearing now are normal with the multi disc converters??? TIA

multidisc

I have used a multi disc since they came out. Just recently had it freshened up. This noise you are describing is not normal!!! Have you taken the convertor bolts out and run eng?

No I have not...good idea though. I did check them to see if any were loose causing the converter to rattle around....all were tight.

Converter bolts good and tight??????????

The only noise you "may" hear (hot or cold) will be some slight "clinky" rattling sound from all the disks rattling around.
You should NOT be hearing something that could be described as a "knock" sound.

Scared the hell out of me when I started a fresh engine, thought it was a rod knock?:(

Put it in gear and the noise stopped. Most multi-disk Precision converters I know about do "rattle" at idle.

I had a very similar prob a while back after some ummm..... "aggressive" tuning runs one night. Turns out that the converter bolts had just worked loose.

Could be converter bolts.....

...or possibly flexplate bolts. Also, a cracked flexplate will make an intermittent rattle as well.

Same here! Also my B Block friends would say I have bad rod knock ! Untill i put it in gear.

Ok....after a few hours of mucking around testing and looking at this and that.....it's fixed! This is a good lesson in attention to detail my friends so pay attention.

I took the OE converter bolts to the hardware store to buy the larger diameter size needed for the PI converter. I picked up some grade 8's that nearly matched the length of the OE bolts....nearly in that the new bolts were ~2-3 threads longer. WELL...those 2-3 threads bottomed out in the dead end mounting tabs and prevented the converter from being pulled 100% tight up against the flexplate. Sure they were tight when I jumped under the car and checked them....problem was there was about .015" gap between the converter and the flexplate:( How I figured this out was...ready for this, while I was pulling myself back under the car on my creeper I used the flexplate to grab on to. When I yanked on it, I felt it move/flex a tad too much to be tight against the converter. When I actually looked real hard at it I noticed a small gap....dumb ass, the bolts are too f'n long I thought to myself!! So, I put an additional washer on there and low and behold.....nice and tight and NO abnormal noises. Those 2-3 additional threads were just enough to cause a gap and let the converter rattle and knock around on there....attention to detail in some cases is paramount! Some things will allow for a little "wiggle room", others will not and that was the case here. So after dropping the pan and swimming in tranny fluid, replacing the just replaced filter and fluid, removing the lock tighted bolts a few times, and the headache, she's up and running. I was sweating having to send the converter back and having it back in the car before BG...especially since I'm right in the middle of a home move. Not to mention the $250 min + shipping for PI to cut it open and tell me there is nothing wrong with it....there would have went my new slicks!! Anyhow, thanks a lot fellas for the opinions....I appreciate it.

Whew...... :o

I thought something was wrong with mine......I just put it in last night......

I'll go back to being happy with it.......

pi coverter

I have one of the 9 disk lockup coverters .when the motor has the right tuneing the noise at idel is all most gone .they are noisey and i had it losened up and still no change .that is a very common sound with these coverters .a wiped out thrust bearing on crank shaft can have a sound like a rod nock and the converter rattle.I did all mods that PI recomended and did not help with the sounds from the converter.good luck .

Wait until you beat on it a bit, it will get louder! I love the silence of the TCS 9/11 but the multidisk will lock harder . Just accept the noise, turn up the radio, or take it out........thats what i did. I am not driving a car that sounds like that on the street! :frown:

mine does the same thing but i dont have a multi disc i have a new convertor and flexplate and it still raps or knocks when i rev it and rev it after a 2 second delay on the throttle i thought it was convertor or flexplate but still does it after removal and replace. WHAT THE &^$#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"9" ...they started out with 7 now they are down to 5

That is what I think as well.... never heard of a 9 disk....

I had a 7 disk model for a 700R4.... had a similar noise to my current 5-disk I have now for the 2004R..... never realized that noise was coming from the converter on the 700.... but looking back... it was all along.
