i swear i'm handy with a wrench. i've consulted my Chilton manual (which i don't really like) and even the Service Manual Supplment CD-ROM that i bought.

it would SEEM there are four bolts holding on the fuel rail. i also removed the feed line and FPR.

i loosened the cover that protects the PS injectors from the turbo's heat. i can't get it off 'cause of the studs it's resting on.

i can NOT get the fuel rail up enough to swap out the injectors. is there any way to do it without removing the entire turbo assly?

it was late and i got frustrated to the point i quit. i'd rather not bend or break anything due to being in a hurry. it feels like something at the back of the rail is holding it up. maybe i'm missing a bracket or something?

thanks in advance.

well when i did mine on a 85 gn. i took off the turbo. its a pain in the a$$ but to me thats how i did it.

That looks to be way I gotta go. I guess I may as well replace some other stuff while I'm in there.

Yep its like that with these cars. One thing leads to another and its always "while I'm in there I should go ahead and replace............" When I replaced my stock injectors they were pretty stuck in there and Some came off with the fuel rail but some didn't. The "o" rings seemed to be stuck in the rail and the intake even with the retaining clips removed. Good luck. it may take a little muscle.

Fun

Ive done that job four times.

I hated it each time.

Def have to remove turbo...actually thats when I chose to replace it with a TA33  because I didnt feel like doing that job again!!!

If its your first time - be careful -I used a pry bar (gently tho!) to unseat the injectors...the fuel rail is fairly thin and easily damaged. Also a good time to do your oil return grommet if need be....

no lie. i guess i'll be ordering a new return line.

also.. does anyone know what this is? it was sitting in the engine bay with one vacuum line attached:

and does anyone know about cruise control systems? i took mine out. to i connect the vacuum lines that ran to it or just plug them up?

oh. and is this an o-ring on the fuel line? something i need to replace? i don't know that i've ever seen an o-ring on a flare fitting before.

That's not a flare fitting. That o'ring has had the hack. Replace them, being sure to lube them B4 installing.

First two things I do when doing ANYTHING on the Hot Air.....1) remove the fan and upper and lower fan shroud....2) remove the turbo....Then you can stand inside the engine bay and reach everything. That seems to be the only easy way to work on a hot air car....You think removing the turbo was a PITA....wait till you try to put it back on....lets just say "drain tube".

FYI: the twinkie looking cannister is a vacuum storage tank for the AC controls. And as far as the drain tube you have...there's nothing wrong with it so long as the flange is good at the turbo, and there are no holes in it...just use a small hammer and a tapered punch and smooth it out on the end. It's stainless, so it should be OK. Remember: Try fixing before buying...if you already think its broke...you cant break it any more than it already is by trying to fix it....you'll save alot of $$$$ that way. HTH ---Keith

LOL. funny you mention clearing out the engine bay to work on the engine: today i took all that out and BAM! i can now stand INSIDE the car. LOL. it's pretty convenient.. but funny.

so. the storage tank for the AC controls. damn. really? i guess i gotta put it back in then. i want the AC work, eventually. i just gotta figure out where the vacuum lines are for it.

as for the drain: i did a test fit. it sits snugly. i also ordered a new grommet anyway. i was able to reshape the drain and i think it will be fine. i'm guessing it drains into a non-so-high-pressure area? seems like a PRIME place to have a leak. and no: i'm not looking forward to getting that B!t@# in there when i put the turbo back on. LOL luckily, there is two of us to do it. but still.... i did order new o-rings for the turbo adapter, and new gasket/donut, etc. hopefully everything bolts up fine. i do have an exhaust leak i gotta find, though. we, fun.

I'll tell you I did my turbo R&R three times in two months for various issues so now I can have it off the car in 15 min. Don't worry you do it enough you will feel like a superhero technician lol. And no there is little to no pressure on the bottom side of the intake so the oil just sprays through the lifter valley returning to the pan. Best thing I ever did though was I made a new drain tube out of stainless line and it makes life that much easier.
