I am going to be in KC Wed thru Friday I am going to try and get in touch with him.

Ty

I hope it is nothing serious.
Back trouble can turn your life inside out...

Aint that the truth! Accounts for more workers comp related claims then ALL other bodily injuries combined.

Brett,

I have a really good friend that has been struggling with this for a couple years.
He is almost at the point where he has to decide if he wants to be hopped up on stuff the rest of his life or get a surgery that in his case has a less than 50% chance of fixing his problem... Chronic pain is terrible, but I don't have to explain that to you.:(

That's the delima that many face as far as surgery.

I always hear the best back surgery is no back surgery and to wait as long as you can till advancements in back surgery progress.

When ur life is not totally consumed by it yet ur quality of life is great affected it becomes a more difficult decision.

I can tell you that about 80% of my friends who have had back surgery state that if they could go back in time they would have never done it. But when ur miserable you ask urself how much worse could things get after surgery? For a lot of people who have had back surgery apparently it can and does get much worse.

Unfortunately, I think that 50% number is a little high which is very discouraging actually.

Back surgey is a billion dollar buisness and new advancements are on the rise all the time so I would tell ur friend to take the pain meds and wait as long as he possibly could. Easier said then done tho, I know.

Last I heard Bryan was in the middle of a move, didn't know he was having back issues. I'll pray a speedy recovery.

Hospital or recovering or moving, I guess I figured he would still pop in from time to time. He is a moderator correct? He is on my friends list and I try to check in with everyone from time to time.
Where ever he is, as long as he is ok.

Coach, thanks for bringing up the post, sorry for being late

Yes and unfortunately they are almost always self inflicted via improper lifting techinique/negligence and so hard for doctors to prove what is really wrong they slide under the radar and WC pays. On another note i hope he is recovering;.

Bison,
You are 100% correct.
Whether a doctor knows the root cause or not is sometimes irrelevant.
Here is a nugget regarding WC, in case you did not know ;);

49CFR1904.5
(a) You must consider an injury or illness to be work-related if an event or exposure in the work environment either caused or contributed to the resulting condition or significantly aggravated a pre-existing injury or illness.

(b)(1) What is the "work environment"?
OSHA defines the work environment as "the establishment and other locations where one or more employees are working or are present as a condition of their employment. The work environment includes not only physical locations, but also the equipment or materials used by the employee during the course of his or her work."

Coach,
Post some info.
Too many people here with back issues from working on cars.

FWIW, my uncle had back surgery about 2 years ago and said he wishes he could have had it done years ago. He said he feels like he's 20 again

Glad you checked in Bryan, Happy New Year! Any chance you are going to the TTA reunion in July?

As far a back problems, I'm each is different depending on the issue, pinched discs and nerves can usually be taken care of with therapy of sorts. Most common is being in traction several times a week for 30 minutes at a time for upper back and neck issues, or hanging upside down is great for anything in the lower back.
I have an inversion table that really stretches you out. By basically pulling / stretching your back out in the opposite direction of its normal compression, you allow blood to flow freely between the joints and it helps to decompress the problem areas My business partner used to severe back issues periodically if he tweaked it just right he couldn't even get out of bed for a day. I remember being on the road when this would happen sometimes, maybe once or twice a year. His now son-in-law is a chiropractor and has put him on the stretching machines 3 or 4 times a week now and he hasn't had a back issue one in about 8-9 years now and even runs again, he had to quit running / jogging due to his back hurting...he's 58 now btw.

And of course a dr isn't going to tell you that proper and regular stretching could easily fix your problem. A store called Relax-the-Back has all kinds of zero impact and zero back compression chairs, stretchers, inversion tables, etc.
