Ive developed this strong tapping noise coming from the front of my motor, near the bottom, on the passenger side. Its always been there, just a little worse now. I cant seem to locate it while listening with a hose. It seems to be coming from the front cover or oil pump area of the cover. The oil pump/filter end of the cover has a plate that makes the pump housing longer. Is this some kit that comes with taller pump gears to increase oil flow?
I notice that whenever I loosen the cam sensor retaining bolt to do an adjustment, then re-tighten it when I'm done, the tapping is very loud for a minute or 2 after startup. If its just a loose cam sensor shaft, why does it get so loud after adjusting the sensor, then quiets down (not completely). If there is alot of play in the shaft, wouldnt it always be really loud? Ive stuck a screwdriver in the front and pried against the cam sensor while its running, and it doesnt really seem to have any impact on the noise. It has before, but its not consistent. It almost sounds like a shot timing chain tensioner, but Im not sure. Kind of like the chain is smacking into the front cover. The motor supposedly has about 10,000 miles on it, so I dont know if the tensioner would die that fast. Would retarded cam timing hurt my mileage that much? I have about 150psi on all cylinders, so Im pretty sure the chain hasnt skipped a tooth.
Does this simply sound like a worn cam sensor? Would the sound radiate all the way down to the oil pump area? Ill probably be shimming it tonight. Ive had the shims since I got the car, but the noise totally went away until a few weeks ago after I adjusted the cam sensor. That, and Ive been fixing 1000 other fundamental things that have been wrong with the car since I bought it.
I really really need to get an oil pressure gauge on this thing too. I could be driving around on 5 psi for all I know. where does the pressure gauge line tap into?
