I have a 87 GN stock bottom roller cam , 38 pds injectors, ported and polished heads match ported intake. Ta- 49 turbo , 3 inch down pipe , bigger throttle body, PTE stock location intercooler. Was thinking of up grading to a better converter would, I be better off using the stock one or going to a 2800 stall ? Anyone?

If you want to get the most out of the TA49 and stock long block, you will need a good converter. Full Throttle can set you up. If you just want to help with spool up, then a restalled d5 or a 2800 10" will work, but leave some performance on the table at the track. Price wise, the Full Throttle Rev X converter is tough to beat.

If the TA-49 has a Garrett exhaust housing, your stock D-5 converter can be re-stalled to 2800, and if it is a Precision housing, the D-5 can and should then be maxed to 3000 stall.

You can spend more $$$ for another converter, but the results will be about the same.

I've got a lot of data logs on near stock engines with small turbos. The stock converter is usually the quickest at the drag strip. Whatever will get you 4100-4200 at full load and slip in the single digits or locked at wot will usually perform the best

Who does re-stalling on a stock converter?

A restall will gain you about 400rpm over stock. I have done many of them. By the time you pay shipping on that heavy converter you will be about $200-250 in a restall.

You will notice a difference but it won't be a huge change. If your looking for a much improved throttle response I'd go to the 10" 2800. I use the PTC 10" for those apps. $500

I wouldn't bother to restall a d-5. I bought one new back in the day for $160 shipped no core charge, and it wasn't worth the money. It does stall higher on the footbrake than a d-5 but spoolup and drive around town feel, I can't tell I swapped it out. Maybe others can do a better job at it?

With the upgrades you have posted, a re-stalled PT12" with stator change will work. I have sold hundreds of them all over the world the last 23+ years or so. It is by far the best 12" available, but my new technology in converter design has changed the way Turbo Buick's Perform. I would recommend my 9.5" 3021 HF design converter in lock-up. It incorporates my high flow technology which allows for a looser bottom to spool the turbo, a tighter top end and it to drives like a stocker. Over the last 4 years I have sold many to owners with TA-49 turbos and not one complaint. All report back with huge performance gains and a few have moved on to larger turbos. The high flow mod lets this happen. If you would like any more info on my product, please feel free to call me any time.

I dont want to high jack this tread but I need at ask a question, who has a trans brake for a 200r4 and do they make a bump box for it. About to go GN racing and want to have a good 10 sec car. sorry for the high jack but I dont want to start another tread just for this answer.

I've got 1 from Dusty.. It's a terror compared to a restall, or stocker.

Don't forget about weight savings by going to a smaller converter, 12" stock d5 is 38lbs compared to??? I will be running a t'netics bb te44 and bought a 10.5" 2500 l/u from ck performance, haven't weighed it yet though..

Those smaller converters usually weigh in the mid twenty lb range. Any of the after market units that work well and you'll think you are driving a different car.

Op, you don't mention a larger hotwired fuel pump, and as chuck pointed out you probably want to look into a larger injector. I run a set of 42lb with stock turbo., you might want to look into a 60lb set or some used 42 lb. If I was going new id go at least 60lb.

The 10.5" l/u from ck weighs in at 30 lbs so an 8 lb savings over the d5, to me its the little things that add up for a street driven tr..
