I used to own a 70 Malibuand if I had a choice between a 69 and 70, my preference would be the 70 Chevelle, because of the interchangeable parts with the 71 and 72 and the fact that the front grill is different from the 71 and 72. The 69 is a one year only vehicle, in that some things will not interchange with other Chevelles (body wise). Also the 70 represents a body style change. Unfortunely, I sold my Malibu about 3 years ago, in search of a 1964 Chevelle. If I had my choice to do another Chevelle project, like Wells, I relly like the 64 Chevelle. I actually sold my rolling chassis to look for a 64 Chevelle. But for the monies I received for my Malibu ($5500, no engine or trans), I could not get a nice enough 64 Chevelle (or Malibu) to replace my 70 Malibu. I'm sure that now that I'm not looking, they're all over the place. I most recently replace my Malibu with a 1955 Chevrolet 3200 pickup truck. The draw to the pickup truck was the same as the Chevelle, I wanted a first year vehicle. The first production year for Chevelle was 64 and so it was for the 55 2nd series Chevrolet pickups (kind of like the mid year 1970 Camaro)

look again,68 and 69 look the same, its the 70 thats by its self

-"tntdiablo" and "gofstbuick", not exactly...Chevelles bodys changed every two or three years. '64 and '65 share the same body, '66 and '67 are the same, as well as '68 and '69. Then, the '70, '71, and '72 body lasted for three years instead of two, except for slightly different grilles and taillights. Even if the same bodies were used for several years, NOT a single year have the same grille or taillights, which makes identifying Chevelles quite easy. After that, '73, '74, '75, '76 and '77 were the last Chevelles and shared the same body for 5 years.
-Not to be forgotten, there were canadian versions too, called Beaumont which were sold by Pontiac dealers from '64 to '69. Aside from grilles and taillights, they were the same as Chevelles, sharing the exact same bodies. I live in Canada and see some Beaumonts at every car gathering we have here...
:)

you are correct, but what i am saying is if you put a 71 or 72 beside of a 70 there is quite a difference in the front grill,no other year of that body style had the grill of the 70,anybody can identify a 70 ,but a 66-67 and 68-69 and 71-72 you have to know what you are looking for to tell the year of those listed

"tnt", it's true that it takes a good eye to tell the '71 (top left picture) from the '72 (top right picture)...The grill on the '71 is separate from the headlamp chrome trim and the parking lights are split into two lenses...The '72's grille "connects" with the headlamp chrome trim and the parking lights are one piece. The '70 has four headlamps and square taillights...(middle right and bottom pictures)
The '71 and '72's rear is EXACTLY the same (middle left picture)...

1968! I miss mine sometimes. It was a real SS 325 hp 396 car, column shift, bench seat, 3:08 12 bolt posi. It was a shell when I bought it in 92. I built a 406 with a B&M 250 PowerCharger, big roller cam, th400, 4:11's. man that thing would thump! Ran some 11.0's. Its in the Bay Area CA somewhere now.

1971

Had a gorgeous 1971 SS4554 with the m-22 rock crusher 4-spd. burnt orange metalic ( bittersweet mist buick ) my favorites are 67 and 71. Gary

My personal favorite model year for the Chevelle was the '69, so I'd defintely pick the '68 before the '70, due to the body style. I just like the front end more on those earlier ones.

My vote goes to the 70 Chevelle as the best looking with 67 a close 2nd.

toofastforyou, to add to some of your trivia, the earlier 71 Chevelle uses a different styled tail lamp lens than the later 71 does, and all of 72 uses it as well. My Chevelle shows it:

And I just recently sold this red beast...

Can't go wrong with either one. But, put a big block in the 70 and it will be worth more, even the clones.

"84Regal3.8", I looked closely at the '71-'72 back up light lenses in the pictures you posted and wonder which one is correct?...Could it be possible that one of them is an aftermarket replacement lens?...or that one of them has been replaced with a '72 lens? I personally prefer the smaller back up lens...(By the way, the rear of the bright green car pictured in my post is a '72...)
Thanks,

Claude

Claude,

From what I have gathered, if you look on the bumper of my car in the pic, the passenger side inboard lens, with the smaller reverse lens and wider ring, was used until mid 1971, then the bigger lens/smaller trim ring was used for the duration of '71 and all of '72. No it is/was not aftermarket. Lots of original Chevelles that still have theirs. My car was built in march of '71.

If you've ever looked at the tail lamp lenses for a 1970 Nova a 1971 Nova and a 1972 Nova you will notice '70- mid '71 used a smaller reverse lamp lens, mid '71-all of '72 used a larger reverse lamp lens.

Not sure why but I think the government stepped in and mandated the lights had to be a tad bit bigger starting in mid '71. You know how in those days the government was making all those new mandated safety changes.

I love the 65's. Really like the 66's, but I'm partial to the 68-69's. Here I am in Dec. 86 with my daily driven M22 4:56 geared 69. :D

For me it'd have to be a 70. although I am partial to '68-'72 Cutlasses.

Just find something that makes you happy, and is either uncollectable, or unoriginal so you don't feel bad about hacking it up or swapping motors.

Hey Rob, is the black car the same as the blue car? And is that a tunnel ram on the blue car? Or a blower?
