Just wondering what the consensus is for the best converter when using a TA33. Right now i have a stock converter, but will be having the tranny out of the car, so a it would be a good time to change the converter if need be.

Thanks!

my stock converter seemed fine with my 33 but i wuld have like a little more like 2200-2500

stock d5 is 2400 stall and should be fine up to a ta-49/te-44.

My stock convertor might have been bad. When I added the orange strip. 2800 stall I think, It helped a lot. There is a guy Lee Thompson knows that can restall you stock D-5.

While a stock D5 will work it will be a little lazier than with the stock turbo. While most would disagree, my dad's daily driver with a 3,200 stall/ TE44 is an awesome street combo. It's way more resoponsive than stock and the turbo spools just as fast if not faster.

While you can restall a D5 up to 3,000rpm it isn't as efficient as a good 9.5" convertor.

I dropped a line to john craig about any converter recommendations and he suggested staying with the stock one unless it is giving me any troubles... just thougt i would pass that along...

Thanks

:)

HOT AIR cars came with A D7 stock torque converter, it is 17-1800 rpm stall, less top end power loss, but a little PIG-ISH down low.

A stock D5 should work OK with TA 33 turbo.

Alright, well how many people have found D5's and D7's in their hot air?

What are the distinguishing markings between the two? I haven't had mine out yet, so perhaps it obvious once its out, i dunno.

THanks

We've had 4 hotair cars and two intercooled, all came with D5s. Got a guys 84 GN over here that Im working on, has a D5. Got a couple BQ (84/85)trannies laying around with D5s. I remember one tranny that I got ahold of that the guy gave me a D6 with it, but Im sure it didnt originally come with it.
As far as Ive always heard, read, and seen, all 84-87s TRs came with D5 convertors.

As far as the best convertor for the TA33. I recall asking John Craig that a long time ago and I could have sworn he said that a 2800 stall was what it was designed to match. That is also how it is listed in the Poston catalog as well I believe, (Poston's turbos are from John/Limit Engineering). I have a 2800 stall 12"(from Poston) with my TA33 and (without building boost from a stop) the car still feels sluggish taking off to me. However I believe results may be different from car to car and combo to combo. All my numbers look good on my car, nut running pig rich or anything like that, just takes a couple seconds for it to really get moving. I dont like it. Maybe I need a 3200-3500 stall and/or a smaller (9") convertor with my combo?

Nothing is ever cut and dry...lol

So let me ask you guys this...it sounds like most agree that D5 will work, but will a 2800 or 3000 stall converter work better? will it make the car a little quicker off the line? at point is the stall too much?

Anyone know the going rate for a 2800 stall?

Thanks,
Nathyn

I don't believe that a bigger stall like say a 2800-3000 would hurt you. Also I think that it would be important to consider your cam into the equation. I know that when I looked into going a slightly bigger cam than stock the guys at Postons were recommending atleast a 2800 stall with a stock turbo. Of course so would I have if I were selling stall convertors. I don't think they're cheap especially the nice onces. I think many like the art carr convertors. Maybe one can be had out of J-yard 200R4 say in a SBC monte for cheap.

WH1Driver (i.e. the guy who sits down the hall from me at work), thanks for the reply. Good luck on finding a 2800 stall in the j'yard...

I checked out postons today, and they recommend the 2800 stall for just about all their converters except the real big turbo's.

Hey bud I was just trying to help. I don't know what convertors came with SBC I never wasted my time playing with one. I went straight to 3.8 Turbos and look who followed :D

I was checking postons as well and they have one for $295. I may have to go the same route to replace my the non lock up on my car. Anyone interested in a non lock up setup?
