Who makes a good windshield?

With 80,000mi on the clock,my original windshield has seen better days. There's nothing big that's wrong with it. It just has lots of little tiny stone chips and fine scratches on the outside. I'll get a glare when the sun is just right.

It's too far gone to have someone buff the glass out. Plus,I'd like to have the area around the windshield repainted and maybe even replace that speaker grill piece since it is a bit warped and has a few cracks.. Three birdz with one stone,ya know?


Who makes a good windshield? I would really like an exact replacement,but they probably don't exist.

I'd have to get the windshield locally since my guess is shipping is impossible.

What brand should I look for? The body shop I use (and trust with my car!) will be doing the work. I've replaced about 10 windshields in my time,but I'm not attempting this one.

Before moving from Long Island New York I replaced mine with a local independent guy from Yankee Trader published by Newspaper, with his own truck and installation equipment.
The cost was about $125.00 (about 4 years ago) brand new, with the top part of the windshield tinted

A windshield for a older regal 78-82 with the antenna in it is usually cheaper and fits the same.

Thanks for the replies. I'd really like to get a new "Soft Ray Safety Flo Lite" one like is in there. It looks like there is a PPG symbol in the middle.. ?

I'm really not looking for cheap. I've seen some cheapo windshields. They look wavy from the sides. Pinkerton comes to mind..

I used to work at Safelite auto glass and if I was buying a windshield for my car I would buy these models in this order Pilkington, PPG, then PGW. I think PGW is owned by PPG but is a china made brand made by PPG. Glass shops will say its the same but its not, PPG is better. Those are in my opinion the better brands on the market.

I do agree for not looking into cheap, as my replacement was as close to original, and I too have seen any cheap low cost replacement windshield.
I don't know what are the going rate or price to replace a windshield in today's market.

Pilkington even makes new windshields for the Vega. Anyone who owns one will know how exciting this is because NOS originals were fetching 800 bucks! Most were starting to delam too.

Anyway, I have some P-glass in the GN as well and I cannot tell the difference. One thing I did notice was the P-glass windshield is a few pounds lighter than stock glass. Not sure why but it is noticeable. Every pounds counts right

I just had a Pilkington added to my 86, and to me it appears to be optically perfect. No distortions at all, and fit perfect.

Pilkington is what used to be lof, which is original equipment on every 86-87 regal I have seen. They no longer use the lof name. Pgw would be second choice. Ppg no longer exists, they changed the name to pgw about 4 years ago. The older one with the antenna costs $10-15 more.

I'll have to take a look next time. What brand is it? Pilkington offers the OEM stamp,which the purist in me wants.

I did contact http://www.pilkingtonclassics.com/ I emailed them asking how much it would cost to ship an '87 Buick Regal windshield to me.

This was the response I got: "To provide a correct windshield we need body style."

Now,their site mentions how these 5 guys in "Classics" have been there forever,and they love classic cars,etc. They don't know what an '87 Buick Regal is??

Ok,wait a minute... Let me get ahold of them again and ask them for a windshield for an '87 MONTE CARLO! hahaha ...what's this world coming to?
