My stock D5 's clutch is done and I am about to swap out trannys to a stronger one and was thinking on Arts 9" vs a 9/11 l/u or equiv, etc.

I actually talked to Art on the phone today and as always he was very supportive and took the time to help me out.
Seems as though his current 9" is very very well designed and has a larger than the norm stator and puts it right there with a comparable l/u and the tq multiplier is greater. His only con was if you are in the steep mountains traveling in that situation for a lengthy time and a small MPG drop.
He claimed that it will ET and Mph the same if not a little better than the a 9/11. He expalined that Jack Cotton buys 5-6 at a time and to call him up and ask him.
Called Jack and he said they are freakin awesome convertors and that they act just like a stocker til you nail it and then they perform real well and his customers love them.

Anyone running one? how do u like it

They work great imo. I have several of them that i am using or used in the past. Tremendous torque multiplication at stall and really good coupling efficiency up top. The last one i checked is in my friends car and only had 9% slip at the end of the quarter. The engine just hovers in the meat of the powerband and propels the car like a bullet with the AC converters. The new ones seem to be a lot more efficient than the ones from 5 years ago.

I am happy with mine. Actually have gone faster & quicker with ac nl than I did with a precision vig 5 disc-locked.

I talked to Art also, for quite a while. At first i was going to go get his convertor and it was going to be a non-LU. Bad thing is though, you'll need to get the non lock up plate. Being the car is a DD car, i was kinda hesitate about that. He said call Jason Cramer (Owner of RJC) But, I never got a hold of him since he was out everytime I called.

I called Bruce at PTS, talked to him and told him what's up. He worked with me in depth on what's wrong with the transmisson and try to find out whats the matter with it before anything. Didnt even talk about him getting the transmisson, or what i should do to it. Bruce said the 9x11 by TCS is a great convertor since its a DD car and i can have LU.

If you send it to Art, he more then likey will not be doing the work, more of his cronnies will be, since Art's getting older.

I sent my trans to Bruce at PTS, and i'll find out how his build and convertor is once i get it back. I felt Bruce was the better guy to go to since his customer service has been 150% since i first talked to him.

I've had the 16930 9" nl in for 10 years. It was one of the first upgrades. It was crazy with the stock turbo. And is perfect for my 63. No problems, drives very well on the street and stalls good at the track. One key is to control the trans temp. so I installed an extra B&M plate type cooler in-line with the stock cooler. Everything works fine and runs cool here in Texas.

Art Carr 9" N-L 3200 stall on a daily driver here and no problems...just run a good standalone tranny cooler with a fan on it and you'll be good to go anywhere...

Art Carr

I live about two miles from his shop. The first time I met him he gave me a ride in his TB. He's just a down-to-earth guy that wants to know his customers, and there needs. He builds solid stuff, and stands behind it. I highly recomend him, and his parts. Just make sure that you get the real Art Carr stuff. I think his company is called California Performance Transmission.

I've got one in my car. I used to have a P/I 7disk convertor and then a P/I 5 disk also. I prefer the A/C 9" from a drivability standpoint and a performance standpoint too. I don't drive me car daily anymore I have a new GTO for that but I recently drove from So Cal. to Phoenix (350 miles + or -) without any issues and ran mid to low 10's then drove home. The A/C convertor gets my vote.

Found out today from Century (PMAC) /Mike Kurtz that Trans go has a real easy to install Non L/u kit. U just drop the TCC sol and then drop the c clip that is up in there and pull out whatever and place in the trans go item and walla it is non lock up.

Mike also said the ARt Carr 9" non l/u is wicked...starting to look better and better.

+1 for the AC non-lock.

Switching from lock-to non-lock is easy to do, and un-do.

1.51 60' with bone stock suspension/engine.....just a few bolt ons, drove it to the track and home.

Mine was a daily driver for two years with that converter. Make sure to get a big enough turbo to slow down the spool-up. 66mm range and up work great.

I would run a larger a/r on the ex side to slow the spool and pick up a couple mph up top rather than go for a bigger turbo. That is unless the turbo is insufficent for his combo.

i run a art carr 3400 non lock, has been serving me great since the conversion, great stall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had an AC 16930. Like Ive said a million times, it felt like I lost 100hp after switching to a D5. That converter felt like a shot of nitrous when you got into boost. But it did slip a ton when accelerating up to cruise speed. At WOT, or actually any level of throttle that got me into boost, it felt like it stopped slipping. It honestly felt like cruising, then pushing in the clutch pedal, punching it, then dropping the clutch and taking off like a rocket. It would slip for a moment to allow the turbo to spool instantly, and then grab and kick me in the butt. And this is hitting the gas from a 40mph roll. It would hit 60 in like 2 seconds. I drive through a small mountain range on the way to work and it slipped like crazy going up those hills. I swapped it out cause I thought my mpg would improve. It didnt...maybe 1mpg, which is pretty crazy considering the rpm's I was pulling up those hills with the AC TC. I traded it for a PTS 9-11. Turned out there was some broken fiber ring inside that the guy didnt know about. PTS out by my house said they would fix it for 200 bucks. This is a 1000 dollar billet converter...Im thinking about selling it. To be honest Ill probably never have the time to swap it back out. The guy said there was about 100 miles on it and wanted to switch to a non lock TC.
