had tranny re-built about 6mos ago. 2mos after being done sprag broke, :frown: so tech fixed it. & know tranny took another dump, but this time when it gets to 15mph it bangs hard. could sprag have broke again? will take back to tech & have it re-done. what could be causing tranny to break so damn soon?

have the 200r4, & I believe it was the 1-2 sprag. we installed hardened pats in tranny but i guess it wasn't hard enough.

Pictures would be helpfull, and to clarify the differences between "Sprag" and "Roller Clutch", the 200-4R use's a r/c in overdrive housing and in the last planetary assembly called "low-roller, if od r/c clutch fails you would have no-drive in OD shifter position, but might have slip when in 3rd or lower, if you lose the low-roller clutch you most likely would not have any forward except in L1 position(and usually accompanied by some ugly sounds:eek: )
A extremely harsh 1-2 shift is not good for these transmissions(or any for that matter) but some people shim or block the accumulator to accomplish this for "Tire Chirp" shift, if you want/desire "Head Banger" shifts, be prepared for nasty repair bills.

Kevin.

the 1st time GN wouldn't move if I placed in D. but it would if I manually shifted from low 1 & up. now it wil take off & when tranny is supposed to shift (1-2) it jerks really bad. Eric does know our tranny for GN as he also owns one & is a certified mech. most important he stands behind his work, so warranty / tranny is covered.

A no-drive in OD but takes off in D3 would indicate od r/c failure(overun friction clutch is engaged in D3-D2-L1).
A 1-2 shift tie-up(jerking) could be low roller clutch failure(in third gear everything reward of center support is rotating as 1)
Low Roller clutch failures can usually be traced to a shock loading that caused clutch to hold-release-hold,(wheel "hop" will cause this)
OD r/c failure is not so common but could stem from severely harsh engagements(a neutral "drop", or maybe a 2-3 upshift flare)

Kevin.

I wonder if the wheel hop did cause this. as wheel hop can get really bad when I don't air up my bags. i will be towing this Thursday back to Las cruces, so he can tear into it & see what failed. will get back with detail's on failure.

Yes wheel hop can cause it. Fix you r wheel hop. What kind of bushings are in the control arms?

I will post pics tomorrow. Low roller damage and low clutch housing damage. Sun gear damage from all the roller pieces travelling thru the back of the trans. Looks like wheel hop damage for sure. Things are hammered on big time.

Eric, I take it that you have pulled the tranny out? by all means post some pics. so, you really think the wheel hop was the culprit?

Got her out and inspected. That roller assembly is hammered pretty bad. Torque converter being shipped off today. Will take pics tonight and post as soon as I get home. :)

Eric, can you say exactly what caused it? as it gave out going 35mph onway to pick son up from school. so the marbles sound was the rollers? did it tear up anything else? will I need new clutch's & so forth?

It is caused by the harsh applying and releasing (hammering) of the rollers against the inner race and the planet. It compresses the rollers and they need a little film of lube and when it "squeezes" the lube out of the way (like when a rod bearing gets hammered) then there is metal to metal and it is a matter of time until it totally fails. I have to replace the low planet assembly, rollers, low clutch housing assembly, sun gear, thrust washers, low clutches, all seals, bushing kit. All other clutches and front half in excellent condition. Pump excellent condition. Will have back together this week and wait for converter to show up. They go to Lubbock for my supplier.

Here are the damaged parts. :)

so the bearings fell out of their race? Eric, why would this happen if you now i dont horse beat GN. could the banging happen from the 1-2 shift, cause this?

Man, ever since this happened to me a couple months ago Ive seen 3 or so post where this has happened. It seems to be more common than I thought it was. I didn't have any wheel hop problems and it was a new sprag. I guess its just coincidence. here are some pics of mine...
