It is caused by the harsh applying and releasing (hammering) of the rollers against the inner race and the planet. It compresses the rollers and they need a little film of lube and when it "squeezes" the lube out of the way (like when a rod bearing gets hammered) then there is metal to metal and it is a matter of time until it totally fails. I have to replace the low planet assembly, rollers, low clutch housing assembly, sun gear, thrust washers, low clutches, all seals, bushing kit. All other clutches and front half in excellent condition. Pump excellent condition. Will have back together this week and wait for converter to show up. They go to Lubbock for my supplier.

Eric, let me know ,what isn't covered under the warranty if anything. did AZ get you the correct radiator?

Wheel hop hammers the rollers (load and unload violently) and they get compressed and as you can see, some of them are flattened out a bit. You can see in the photo of the low planet how the outer portion shows "compression" marks on the ramp. When I put that one in, it was in mint condition. The inner race didn't crack or break at least. Wheel hop needs to be addressed. Like neutral dropping the car. Not good for the trans either. Almost the same affect but on the low housing and case in that respect. The new planet is mint condition and the rollers are brand new. When it shifts to 2nd, the low rollers freewheel (over run) so that should not cause this at all.

And, yes Idiot Zone got the correct radiator finally. :) Will put that in while waiting for converter to show back up. Those guys want to argue that the car doesn't exist or that the hotair radiator is the same one for intercooled.

so the bearings fell out of their race? Eric, why would this happen if you now i dont horse beat GN. could the banging happen from the 1-2 shift, cause this?

even they can learn something if they pay attention. so what do we need to do for this don't happen again?

Need to address the wheel hop issue for sure. When I tore into my trans (Lonnie Diers built 8 or so years ago by previous owner) it looked nothing like this. Looked like the one I am getting ready to install into yours. Mine does not wheel hop with the traction bars (I don't use the airbags) and hooks hard.

Dont forget to mention those control arm bushings looked about hosed........

True. Stock, boxed lowers with the stock rubber bushings cracked. I would upgrade. Mine has the Lakewood lowers and they are pretty stout for not costing a whole lot of cash.

Summit or Jegs for the complete control arms. Lakewood LAK-20140 $107.95. Urethane bushings included.

Wheel hop will definitely cause low roller damage. Looks like that is exactly what happened.
