Thoughts on this? http://www.businessinsider.com/a-stuck-accelerator-makes-a-woman-dodge-traffic-at-110-mph-2012-8

This actually happened to me as well last nite on the way home from a cruise night. Was getting on Rt 15 following a newer Corvette and when he got on it hard so did I. I just could not get my right foot to let off the gas until I did a fly by on him.;)

I wonder why no one suggested she put it in neutral, pull over, get the car stopped and shut off the engine? I seemed to have that stuck accelerator problem once in a while myself. For some reason when a street bike or high powered car is spotted the pedal just goes down and won't come back up till I'm in front of them.

I'll get in trouble here but...you just mentioned 3 things that wouldn't ever happen. A woman with common sense that knows about cars? Seriously?:p

Come on, a KIA? Darwin award! The brakes on those things are 20x's more powerful than the engine. I could see maybe 5 seconds of disbelief, but there's no excuse for stupidity after that...

Hey, I damn near put a 69 Dodge in a river one time when a broken motor mount smashed the aircleaner over the WOT!

Wait, I'm not helping....

I was young, only been driving for a few months. I didn't even eat the guardrail, let alone jump it.

I did remember to turn the key off after the panic moment. At least I'd already won the race by the time I figured it out! But that meant 110+mph, with fear of excessive braking at speed and the curve coming fast.

Nuetral's vehicular devestation is hard to swallow, and maybe the key just doesn't occur to some.

Crap, I'm not helping, again....:p

This whole thing sounds too fishy! I mean, with all the time she had on her hands to react, she couldn't have been so stupid as to not just turn the key off?????

Have you seen the videos? This whole story stinks! Not once on the videos did I see a brake light (until it was pulled over that is)! I'd have been standing on the brake pedal, turning the key off (or pressing the engine stop button if it has no key)!!

This whole thing is BS! But ya gotta admit, she got her 15 minutes of fame on the Today show!

Well, guess that is one way to get away with a high speed jaunt, pedal to the metal and then call 911 and have some fun. Then when you finally stop, poke your eyes so it looks like you are crying. Then make the rounds of the talk shows. She will probably be suing Kia too to make some $$$.

I doubt it. Nothing was found to be wrong with the vehicle. They should sue her for defamation, the police dept should arrest her for several different things including engaging in pursuit and reckless driving, and the DMV should revoke her license and press charges against her also. Stupid bitch.

Well, one problem with turning off the ignition is loss of powersteering. She said the shifter was stuck. According to Kia they couldn't replicate the issue. Maybe the bag of doughnuts fell under the pedal and got stuck. I don't know how she could drive and talk on the cell at the same time unless there was a bluetooth setup. Got to give her credit for going off road at 100 and still keeping it together.

I believe this is all a hoax. The original report of this said she had put the car in neutral and it wouldn't go into neutral and she also turned off the car and the engine wouldnt stop. So the car won't go into neutral and the car won't shut off! That is three rare problems all at once. I am officially raising the BS flag.

I would have never figured a Kia capable of hitting 120 MPH.

And I, too, raise the BS flag on this.

some newer cars don't have a mechanical linkage between the shifter and the transmission- the "shifter" is just a switch that sends a signal the the BCM that tells the ECM that it would be great if it could please shift into neutral when it has the time.. couple that with the fly-by-wire throttle body that is operated by the same BCM/ECM that operates the shifter.. some new cars don't even have a cable for the parking/emergency brake- it's just an electric solenoid at each wheel that is controlled by the same computer(s) that control everything else.. then there is the keyless ignition switch that also goes thru the same computers, too.. so it's not out of the realm of possibility that something went wonky in one or more of the computers and sent her on a joyride..

how do you fix something like this? a kill switch that physically kills the power to the computers- race cars have had them forever... a big red button on the dash that you push to kill the car.. boom.. problem solved..

novaderrik: while some cars have some of those features, there are only a very few that have all of them on one platform, and KIA isn't one of them. ;)

tc86gn: even better with the push button start/stop. She shouldn't have had to fiddle looking for the key and turning it. Just reach out and push the button, that would have killed it. Does mine

I just caught part of the story and knew it was reported as keyless. I'll rely on what you say cause I have no clue about these new contraptions.
