Timing chain broke tonight...... looking to change that out maybe Friday night.... fellow TR friend... says... "Hey...I have a barely used Webber Cam... 214/206 or something like that....ran great.... you need to put that in ""while you are in there""
Come home..... read.... read some more..... read some more.....
See an aweful lot of threads praising the cheap SpeedPro 204/214 ... and HT969 lifters......
Any opinions?
Ported heads are in the future at some point....probably home ported 8445's due to budget....
How does these relatively small cams effect gas mileage? That is somewhat a concern with me......I drive mine 105+ miles per day....5 days a week...
Eventual goal.... is low 11's on any given day.... and high 10's on a real good air day... with a TE60 turbo.. on home ported 8445's.. on pump gas and alky.... and still make that 105 mile daily roundtrip commute....

I drive my car alot also and am currently in the process of installing a 204/214 cam with the HT969 lifters. Ive done this install on friends car and love this cam I know its not what you where offererd but for the money you cant beat it IMO and the porformance is great espically if its a street car just my 2 cents btw our combo's will be almost iddenical(sp been a long day lol) Im runing a 61 turbo and a small shot of juice sometimes for hte extra kick till I did the heads and cam
*Edit* also I recently tryied a 83 housing on my car and am in love with it espically if you are runing regular street tires altough I have a 3400 stall might want to think about giving a bigger housing a shot
I order a CS 1016R from Northern Auto Parts...... got it in.... never opened the box..... until I was ready to put the break-in lube on it and stick it in..... took it out..... they sent me a CS1106R ..... it looks like a SBC cam...... #$%^%$#&
Looks like my project will drag on another week or two......
i personally prefer roller cams. i have had more than my share of flat tappet cams go flat. lets see..... stock, atr 313, 210/205 ... thats all i can remember right now. you could get a 206/206 roller and never worry about a lobe failure. just my .02 cents worth. good luck. jeremy

I'll second that- I had an ATR 204/214 go flat, and just pulled an Edelbrock cam (same profile) out of the car- nothing wrong with the cam, but I got a deal on a roller cam, and decided to put it in instead.
Reds Hot Air or Reds TType, one of those 2 names, ran 10.41 on girlded stock engine and a 204/214 flat tappet cam and a LT70 turbo. In the 130+ mph range
I had one in my car last year before I went roller and ran 11.79 @ 118mph on 21PSI, stock engine and a TE61 turbo
FrankG on the board here sells them for $99 cam and lifters I think

I would love to go HYD Roller... but the funds aren't there... the only reason I am going down this path anyway.... is my timing chain was worn out and jumped time.... might as well re-cam it and gasket match the intake and intake side of the heads while I am there....
AS far a po-boy hyd roller.... has anyone used stock GM hyd roller lifters.... and made a cage similar to the one on the factory hyd roller SBC's?
This might be do-able and is just my kind of project... just down the road a little.....
FWIW.... If my cam goes flat... I will be kicking myself in the @ss for even messing with it.....
If your chain broke.. you bent some pushrods. On the cylinders you bent the pushrods.. do a compression test to make sure you didnt bend some valves. You can also use a straight edge over the valve tips and make sure they are all at the same height.
Maybe a good time to redo the rocker shafts as well, and springs.

The chain only slipped.... don't know how much.... about half the teeth on the cam sproket are 95% gone..... it doesn't appear that any push rods are bent..... I had it completely torn down (engine still in car.... intake off cam/lifters/pushrods/rockers removed)..... that is when I opened the box to discover the wrong camshaft....
Got my new 204/214 cam in .... put recommended sealed power break in lube on it.... installed it... new timing chain and gears......HT969 lifters...pushrods... rockers.... roller cam button.....timing cover... new water pump.... prelubed it.... coming out all but one rocker arm.... it appears to be at full lift.... #3 cylinder.... got plenty of oil flowing out the rest of them.... and coming back from the turbo drainback line....
will finish buttoning up tomorrow hopefully... and setting the cam sensor.... and installing the intake.....
Hope to break the cam in tomorrow afternoon late..... before dark..... and get it washed...
What kind of oil are you breaking it in on? If you are looking for something that has alot of zinc......Valvoline VR1 racing. It is available at Napa in 10w30. There has been some questions if GM EOS still has the zinc in it or not. Just wanted to let you know. Good luck, Jeremy
I have Valvoline max life 10W40 in there now. Should I change it? I want to run at least one oil change worth of dino oil before I go back to 10W30 Mobile 1 Synthetic....
From the msds sheets that i read... the synthetics dont have the zinc. but i am not sure if that makes an "apples to apples" comparison. check out the valvoline website and make your decision from that. just wanted to pass that little info that i had on. i am not sure if the VR1 has all the detergents to keep a street engine clean. mine is rarely driven so i dont have to worry as much. later, jeremy
She lives again! finished buttoning everything up......turns out the cam sensor was 180 deg out..... the only thing I can figure... is somehow I got the cam 180 out from what I intended? I never moved the engine.....from cam and timing chain installation... to setting the cam postion sensor before the engine ever turned over.... Oh well.... tb.com member and long time friend Andre Ellis (also screenname) came over to help finish it up....
We put a couple of thin washers under the throttle stop and let her go about 2300 RPM for 20 min.... with a big @ss fan blowing across the front end of the car.....
took it out for a spin... IAC is acting crazy.... won't hardly set.... then it goes all the way up even though the engine is idling like 1100 RPM....took it out and cleaned it off good and lubed it with WD 40 a little...still crazy
I gave up at 2 AM.... might replace it tomorrow... I just bumped the idle with the screw where it would stay running maybe it will free up with some driving.... I'll get a look at the BLM's and see how they look after the 104 mile round trip to work and back tomorrow.... hopefully it will loosen up.
metal dust in oil..... check oil after sitting a little while.... wipe it and recheck it.... oil looks clean.... ???? stock turbo has gone south.... 158k miles.... car has been 150 or so miles since I got it back going.
I am afraid cam is wiping a lobe. It could possibly be the reminants of the cam gear that got chewed up when it slipped the chain..... there was some aluminum gone off the cam gear..... I attempted to flush the motor with diesel fuel.... a couple gallons worth... to try and get all foreign matter out.....
What now?
I am probably going to drain oil... refill.... crank it up let it idle for like 20 minutes... and drain.... do that like 2 times.... last time changing filter....
If the oil appears to be flushed and remains clean, I will install my TE60 that has sat on the shelf for a year.... and drive it a little more.. and see what happens.
When people wiped lobes, what are the symptoms? I assume at some point, you have no preload on the hyd lifter.....and the valve begins to tap
I guess I am scared one of these things has happened/happening
1.) cam lobe is wiping
2.) cam button has come off and cam is grinding into timing cover
3.) reminants of cam gear is floting around inside my engine
I could have mistaked the noise I heard my engine making (which most likely was the turbo exhaust blades hitting the housing) for the cam walking into the timing cover....
I did (when I installed it) put timing cover on.... suddelnly became paranoid the button came off... and pulled it back off to see if it had..... it was still right where it was supposed to be.......
All I know... is that my car is making noises I have never heard..... (could have been the turbo mostly).....
Changed oil twice tonight.... let car idle (with old turbo) and get up to operating temp..... drain hot oil..... did that twice..... I think some of the discoloration in my oil is carbon from the spent seals in the turbo..... I have decided to put the 60 on it. I got the stocker off.... and the 60 sitting on it... just gotta bolt everything back up tomorrow......Gonna crank it up tomorrow morning.... and let it idle for 20 min or so... and see what the oil looks like.... if it is ok.... I will probably drive it around some... and see how it does... checking oil regularly and listening for any strange noises. I would try and get a used 49 or something... but I would have to give at least what I have in this used TE60.....
Just a suggestion..... FILTER-MAG. you know, the magnet that you put on your filter. it is awfully hard to get all the metal out of the engine without taking all the galley plugs out and the motor apart. this would be the nextbest thing. it is worth a shot. good luck, jeremy
