well, after 11 weeks of waiting for my short block, and another 7 weeks waiting on my turbo, finally got running over the weekend. as my f#$%n luck would have it, i now have a 2-3 shift flare. the trans was built in summer of '09 and really doesn't have much time on it due to other issues with the car. feels like a monster now with the new engine. seems like a really long time for it to want to shift 2-3, plus the flare on hard throttle. wondering if tv cable adjustment can affect this? is it towards the firewall with the cable to shorten shifts? any chance of a seal drying out enough in 4 months for this to happen?

2/3 flare is usually the start of third clutch failure. It is possible the calibration could handle your original setup but not the new one.If you can ,check the pressure to see if it is dropping during the flare. If it isnt, pull the trans and replace the clutches and recalibrate the hi gear circuit.

Towards the firewall will firm shifts, but once it's flared damage is done. Did you adjust the TV cable properly as per gnttype.org instructions ?

cable was adjusted properly... the car literally feels like im hitting it with nitrous when i roll in and mat it... i'm guessing that the power level is way up and the trans was on it's way out....

I had a similar problem on a new build a few years ago and I damaged the trans with the flare. I pulled the trans and went thru it and put it back in and had the same issue. I put a pressure gauge on the trans and ran it and found that I was losing some pressure during the shift. I added an extra qaurt of trans fluid and it took care of the problem. I decided to go ahead and get a deep sump pan with the bottom feeding filter and never had another problem with it.

Common issue with the 2004R. All the fluid throws to the back of the tranny on hard launches/accelleration. About the time the 2-3 shift commands, the filter pick-up is partialy exposed and cavitates the pump. The "quick & dirty" fix is simply 1/2 to 1 qt of atf. Works fine. The "correct fix" is a deeper pan with "bottom feeder" pick-up.

time for some new clutches and get the pts deep pan its sweet !!!!

Interesting Mike K, everyone I've talked to said a 2-3 flare means the trans is starting to go.

I've had the same problem since I put in a transbrake, probably because it is back to stock fluid level. Is any fluid better than another for this?

well, trans guy called today and said trans is trashed...all clutches smoked, pump scored, lots of metal...said the converter went, taking everything else with it... this is the 3rd converter to lunch on me in a very short time.. 10" lockup units single disc... the first 2 were Pat's and i was locking the converter in 2nd...definitely got the 2 tenths and 2 mph... 3rd unit was a Star...never locked it... had issues with the car for over a year due to weak valve springs on brand new Champion heads...car was solid low 11.. totally new combo now, low 10 capable...at what point are lockup converters not able to handle power, locked or not?? trans guy is leaning me towards a non lock up unit with the power level i should be making...

Going to try a Transmission Specialties unit...recommended by high hp guys in this area...

Mike: many thanks for this post.

Mine was flaring and lurching at 2-3 shift at WOT and everything pointed to smoked clutches. I was perplexed as to how the tranny could operate to near perfection at less than WOT and have that problem. Read your post and added a quart of aft and took my wife for a ride to get an ice cream cone. Had a flat, smooth 4 lane with no cars so I slowed down and rolled into WOT. Hit 88 MPH and it shifted firmly and smoothly into 3rd with no flare and lurch.

I ran my tranny for a few years with an extra qt in the pan and never had problems. I run a deep pan now, but the extra fluid does do the trick.

Deep pan was on the tranny when I bought it 10 years ago and always kept it filled to the top of the hatch mark. Read Mike's comment and thought "What do I have to lose, a $4 quart of tranny fluid?"

Possible that the guy who freshened up my tranny put a 2004R pickup tube and filter rather than the longer 700 model. He came back from vacation today so I'll give him a couple of days to get caught up and then talk to him about that along with a dual feed 3rd gear modification.

I had the 2-3 flare also. Never got it until I got on it from a 20mph roll and stayed in it. Car went clear up to around 5700 rpm, flared and slammed into 3rd under wot. I'm sure it's screwed now. Car drives fine but has developed a whine/growl that I haven't been able to track down that goes all the time. I'm going to do some more looking into it. Hopefully it isn't the trans. Didn't plan on doing anything with it for another year.
