i bracket race the car with trans selector in 3rd.
1/2 shifts @4800
2/3 shifts@5200
i'd like them close to 6000
I read in the CK book that too light of a governor can cause a lot of problems.
i think the governor is trimmed as much as it can be.
Cheers!

Using a KC code valve body with a stock BR governor is usually what is done to get shift points near 6000. But it can be problematic too. Mine was too high at 6400 on the 1-2 but just right on the 2-3 at 5950. I went back to a BR valve body bought a ratchet shifter.

Curious what valve body / governor combo is giving you a 1-2 that is lower than the 2-3? That seems unusual.

You can increase spring pressure on the TV limit valve to increase your shift points, but only ~400 rpm or so at most.

I was wondering the same thing. So the only way to increase the shift points more than a few hundred rpm, is to replace the VB?

The trans originally came out of an Olds diesel wagon. i believe its a OM valve body.
I rebuilt the trans with the $1000.00 kit from CK, that was 2 years ago, 2,000 miles and 200 track passes.
i had use a floor shifter and shifted at 5800. (different car same drivetrain)
In this car i dont want to install a floor shifter, but i need to shift at 6k to run 11.50's.

Column shifting at 6k...tricky!

What did it shift at before you lightened the gov?
Had an OM vb in the first 200 but I can't remember where it shifted a bit under 4000 I think.
I wish I still had it , it had the lock valve in the vb. I let Bruce T. talk me out of it.

if i remember correctly it was 4000 and 4400.
i thought doing all the mods in the master kit, that the VB would be the same as say a GN.

I think i will simply column shift it and set the light at 5800.
I'll work the cockscomb for a better, more positive detent.

Raised my shift points from 5000 to 6800 removing weight from the governor. Then again I have a EA Trans so it's a different vb

EA is that a Lonnie trans? Level 3.
did he suggest removing the weights?
i would like to understand the difference between VB's.
i thought they were cast the same but with different slides and springs.

Yes Lonnies stage 3. He told me to remove weight and see if I could get what I was looking for. I did get it however I lowered it some and added weight back

OK i needed to re-read your post.
i misunderstood, i thought it said you removed "the weights".
did your governor look like mine when you reached 6800?

After adding weight back

You should get a scale and measure both large and small weights

What are the shift points currently?

How much do they weigh?
current 4800 and 5200.
i did not weigh them, been trimming and testing.

i understand the light weight is for WOT shifts and the large is for part throttle.
maybe i'll trim the larger weight and see if that raises the WOT points.

There is more to it than just the governor and weights. Mike K told me years ago that some of the valves on the vb were different size, we know the springs are different in different code transmissions. The tv valve is larger in the performance units. When you raise the line pressure this make a different and the MTV pressure also changes. It is a very complex piece as auto transmissions go.

Check out that link.
