Hey guys,

I've been lurking for a while. This seems to be the only good place for info on the 2004r. I'm building a 66 Impala Convert with a twin-turbo 468. This will not be a track car. Was originally looking at a 4L80E but they're very heavy and even more expensive. You guys seem to be abusing the heck out of the 2004r.

My only concern is the extra weight of the car. About 3900lbs and 900-1000hp, will I tear it up or will it last? I don't mind paying for a well build trans but I would like it to last.... any opinions...... 4L80E or 2004R

Thanks,
Bob

im not an expert but at that level and that heavy of a car, i would go with a 4l80e. But maybe one of the gurus will chime in with a differing opinion.

I've had a couple PM responses (thanks!). Looks like 4l80e is the way to go. I like the gear ratios of the 2004r better but the reliability of the 4l80e looks impressive at the larger power levels.

look ,go to my site and look at our gm aod hybrid transmission.itll handle the power and reliably.its an aod with an sfi aluminum bellhousing thatll bolt right to your engine.if youd like email me your phone number and we can discuss it at length.forget the 4l80e its too heavy.this thing has already been proven reliable.ive got them in the 7s already with 3400 lbs.ckperformance.com gmaod hybrid link is on our homepage.there was an article on the trans too.ill search the forum and put it up.

I love my Hughes Street/Strip 4L80E. Having it be tunable with a laptop is really nice. You have control over shift points, line pressure at mph and TPS points, etc, for every gear. Datalogging and a dashboard for monitoring stuff. If you change tire size for a race, you can pull up a specially tuned setup in about 15 seconds.
